Mayor's Gun Talk Begets a Warning from Rifle Group (NRA)

Only hours after Mayor Bloomberg vowed in his second inaugural address to launch a national campaign against "illegal guns," the gun rights lobby is mobilizing to respond, with the influential National Rifle Association accusing the mayor of "intimidating law abiding Americans."

On Sunday, as Mr. Bloomberg was sworn in for his second term, he invoked the names of police officers shot and killed in the line of duty as he announced a new, central focus of his administration - protecting New Yorkers from what he called "the scourge of illegal guns" by taking a message for tougher gun laws to "Albany, to Washington, and to every capital of every state that permits guns to flow freely across its border." He called it the city's "most urgent challenge."

The administration has yet to provide concrete details of its new approach, though it seems to involve asking other states to adopt and enforce New York-style laws requiring the registration and licensing of all handguns. But the ambiguity of the city's new gun agenda hasn't stopped Second Amendment proponents from beginning to fight back.

"I think Mayor Bloomberg ought to focus on New York City, given that that's his area of responsibility. He has challenges over there because he has misplaced priorities," the director of public affairs at the National Rifle Association, Andrew Arulanandam, said. "Rather than focusing on enacting more gun control laws that only affect law abiding citizens, he should make sure that criminals pay the harshest penalties for breaking the law."

When asked if the rifle association is intimidated by Mr. Bloomberg's newly aggressive posture, Mr. Arulanandam said: "We take every threat towards the rights of law abiding Americans seriously, but we think the mayor would be better served if he would put his financial muscle and the muscle of...

NYC Sullivan act was passed as a blatant racist law to prevent Blacks, other people of color and Eastern Europeans from obtaining firearms.

If it is only the "illegal" guns that are causing the trouble and that Bloomin idiot wants to address, then obviously making guns illegal (applying regulations) doesn't work.

If the answer to the drug problem and "illegal" immigration is not to step up enforcement but to legalize or grant amnesty, then we ought to just legalize all guns.

Problem solved.

I stumbled across Mayor Bloombergs speech on TV the other day and heard him make his statements on guns. He sounded like a wussy milque-toast liberal.

What part of Brooklyn are you from? I grew up in Bensonhurst, and Midwood, and attended St. Athanasius, but moved to Long Island, so I didn't go to high school there.

Anyhow, Bloomberg is a putz.

Whatever happened to that young man who was prosecuted for shooting a criminal in his house, thus protecting his family from harm?

Immediately following JFK's assination, all NYC high school shooting teams were disbanded. Gun amnisty programs popped up in the city around 1964, seasonal game hunters were stashing their rifles in friends homes in NJ & LI for the last century.

What makes Mr. Bloomingidiot think after years of draconian gun grabbing ignorance that he can make a failed, unconstitutional policy work?

Oh, wait, silly me, I forgot he's a billionaire RINO. Never mind.

I'm not. I'm from the Inwood that's north of Washington Heights in Manhattan.

Geographically, it was a great location and neighborhood with its parklands and public transportation.. I'm north of there now, but Inwood is getting yuppyfied.

On one hand, it is probably good that the NRA is responding.

On the other, responding just lends Mayor Bloomberg credibility where none is due.

Guess what, Mayor? Guns don't pull the trigger - people do. And until you face reality, people like you will always have a problem dealing with it. Tougher gun laws don't stop criminals from committing crimes, but it surely puts a lot of restriction on law-abiding citizens who are not about to kill anyone.

Your “tougher” gun laws won't deter criminals but tougher criminal sentences such as death sentences or LIFE in prison, do.
