The worldwide trade in caviar and other products that come from the wild sturgeon has been banned by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.A spokesman said the decision was imposed for scientific reasons connected to dwindling stocks of sturgeon, and to bring an end to illegal poaching in the Caspian Sea. Every year the organisation approves fishing quotas for sturgeon proposed by nations from the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Danube regions.
Now it is asking for confirmation about stocks of the fish before it can agree to new catches, saying exporting countries should adopt a common management plan. Stocks have declined as much as 30 percent since mid-2004.
The legal trade in caviar is thought to be worth about 85 million euros a year but the black market may be worth up to five times that amount.
What are the chances the people instituting the ban aren't involved in the black market trade?
I predict a huge leap in black market prices.
Well, there are sturgeon in the St. Croix river, between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and I can legally catch one a year. I guess I'll try for a female, then.
I do have a recipe for turning those sturgeon eggs into caviar, too. Mmmmm.....caviar.
Sturgeon meat is also very good. I've eaten it a couple of times, and enjoyed it very much.
There are also sturgeon in the major rivers of the West Coast. Every year, a number of them are caught in the Sacramento river.
Good site on sturgeon fishing on the Pacific West:

We're DOOMED!
That seals the fate of this species.
You know, the trade embargo on Cuba really stopped people from smoking Cuban cigars around here, wait a minute... it didn't. If you have money you can get access to most anything you want. That being said, we do eat caviar on special occasions, and whether they ban it or not, we'll continue to eat caviar. I'm not gonna change my life because some bureaucrat says I need to.
Bush's fault! He needs to appoint a new Sturgeon General.
It figures.
They've even regulated the sale of bananas -- based on their curvature angle.
Yeah, but you won't be able to order it from Dean & Delucca any more.
There are a number of caviars not from sturgeon, and some are quite excellent, although not the same.
I'm a big fan of the flying fish roe used by sushi chefs. I've found other uses for it than in sushi. Lumpfish roe is also not so bad, and it's very inexpensive. The only problem I have with it is the dye they use to make it look like caviar. I wish they'd drop that.
Properly prepared salmon roe is also very tasty, and it's plentiful. I'm not sure how it would be received by most folks, though. Big pink or orange fish eggs may not appeal to everyone. I've prepared salmon roe for the table every time I've been salmon fishing, and everyone has enjoyed it.
It should work as well as Prohibition worked on alchohol, gun bans, and ivory bans.
This has to be the UN, right?
Now what am I supposed to snack on while I'm beating my surf for not polishing my boots.
(actually he does, I just beat him anyway)

Isn't that how fish flu is spread?
