New York Times executives are "stonewalling" on questions about the paper's decision to publish top secret information about the Bush administration's use of the National Security Agency to conduct surveillance operations against terrorists, the paper's public editor charged on Sunday.
"The New York Times's explanation of its decision to report, after what it said was a one-year delay, that the National Security Agency is eavesdropping domestically without court-approved warrants was woefully inadequate," public editor Byron Calame wrote in a New Years Day column.
In its initial report on Dec. 16, Times said that editors held the story at the request of the White House, then edited out some - but not all - of the information that Bush administration officials warned would compromise national security.
But a frustrated-sounding Calame said that explanation wasn't good enough, adding: "I have had unusual difficulty getting a better explanation for readers, despite the paper's repeated pledges of greater transparency."
"For the first time since I became public editor, the executive editor and the publisher have declined to respond to my requests for information about news-related decision-making," he lamented.
Three days after the Times began publishing the national security secrets, Calame says he emailed a list of 28 questions to executive editor Bill Keller, who "promptly declined to respond to them."
He then sent the same questions to Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who also declined to respond. "They held out no hope for a fuller explanation in the future," Calame said.
He accused the two top Times officials of "stonewalling," adding, "The paper's silence leaves me with uncomfortable doubts."
Why haven't the Republicans been out in front of this explaining that there is a HUGE difference between what Nixon did and what the NSA is doing now?
As if I had to explain, (and if I can then why can't the pubs)? Watergate was spying on your political enemy. What the NSA is doing is spying on those who would make hometown USA glow green in the middle of the night if given the chance.
Demoncraps would rather have one of our cities nuked than do what it takes to keep us safe.
They disgust me, and quite frankly, the lack of defense of our president by his own party is sickening too.
It's astounding, the NY times is fleeting
Editor madness, has taken its toll
But listen closely, not for very much longer
It's time for Justice Department, to take control
Ticked me off! I was looking for the complete Calame article, cuz, I'm tellin you, he was no where near as mad as the NewsMax article implies!
Lets see..... publishing NATIONAL SECURITY operations for the world to see..... Yep TREASON!!!!!!!
ABC CBS NBC CNN its all the SAME, Propaganda.
Might as well call them all AmeriJazerra.
Show them how much Gravitas Hugh Bris has. Vote with your remote! Shut down the Alphabet channels.
He's Got A Plan
Zippo Hero
Well that was a worthless piece of so called journalism
Thanks for sharing.
Don't say that I didn't warn you!
What is the "public editor" ?
The job of the public editor is to critique the practices, standards and culture of the newspaper, to identify and examine critical errors and omissions, and to act as a liaison to the public.
Two options for the MSM traitors:
1 - Firing squad
2 - Hanging
I'm deadly serious
Those accusing GW are part of illegal the leaking of top secret information and documents
They know they are going to be exposed and nailed
Under existing federal statutes any and all profits and other income dereived thru the publishing of confidential information is foreited to the US Treasury
The NYT licenses and access should be pulled immediately
Instant banning from any WH press conferences
Shut the traitorous SOBs down now
They are lobbying McCain to pass unconstitutional legistlation giving the press immunity from investigation and prosecution
In effect a new branch of government that is unaccountable and partners only with the democrat party
Sooner or later the public will take any actions required to correct these illegal traitorous actions - and I do not refer to boycotts or dropping subscriptions
No jury will convict anyone who takes action against a traitor to the USA
The media declared war on America and is a willing greedy traitorous partner of Al Qaeda
Time to castrate and hang these scumbags

On a sidenote I see that INTEL has at least one full-time employee who is working for the DNC during working hours using INTEL computers and INTEL email accounts linked to various democat websites
This is a deliberate and wilful and illegal felony violation of federal and state campaign finance and election statutes
It is an illegal under the table massive contribution by the INTEL employee and INTEL corporation itself

do I really have to say it???
let them stonewall in jail after they have been frog marched away by the FBI.
It's time for some warped humor!
Thanks. I bet he feels empowered.....
Somehow I think the public editor is supposed to be a patronage appointment and the employee should remember that and say nothing ( at least according to upper management anyway ).
Actually Nixon didn't do anything wrong either. Yes Nixon was spying on the democrats, but only because he believed the democratic party had been infiltrated by communists... which it had.
Disagree. 70% of the population side with the President on this one. This story is effectively over for the Media, except for the upcoming jailing of reporters for not revealing sources, and the upcoming charges and convictions against the leakers.
This story is a definate win for our side and a disaster for the MSM and the Democrats.
Thankyou! Thankyou! I was starting to get very frustrated. I'm not so sure that I'm willing to just trust NewsMax on this one, and, a lot of the posters here are gettin' way off track. Although I agree with them. I do think that NewsMax and Michelle Malkin "cherry-picked" Calame's article to just show the points they wanted to make. I'm kinda surprised at MM today. She's usually much better than that! But,,, I'm still hopelessly in love with her!
Calame was mad about one thing and only one thing- the NY Times didn't publish the story before the presidential election. He had absolutely no problem with the national security information being leaked and he was adamant the leakers identity be protected. Calame was pissed the Times didn't do more to politically damage Bush.
