'Not in my back yard' cry holding up FEMA trailers Emotional tone of opposition hints at role of stereotypes of race, class Monday, December 26, 2005 By Rob Nelson and James Varney%%par%%Staff writers As officials desperately seek temporary housing locations for New Orleans families whose homes were shattered months ago by Hurricane Katrina, the best site in the minds of many residents is clear: somewhere else.

In one of the post-Katrina era's ironic role reversals, the same local officials and residents who once screamed at FEMA to get trailers to New Orleans quickly are now fending off the 17,777 trailers that FEMA has on hand in Louisiana and says it can deliver immediately.

At least it would get the 'homeless' out of his state's hotels so people will want to tour and travel his state again.
So glad I don't travel for a living! I would perish the thought of having to stay in a place where the evacuess STILL are.

Prudence must be used when distributing Mercy.

One must protect family and property. Considering that my subdivision does not allow outbuildings or a dog kennel, I would not want a trailer on the other side of my property line either.

but Perry takes 400,000

He could have kept his border closed to them.
Then what would the people have said?

I'll tell ya what....those people in LA are a problem from what I can see....

I don't see any of them working a full 8-5 job; I don't see any of them paying their bills, they cry when the Gov. said you got so many days to find somewhere else to live, we're cutting off the flow of monies....

What do they expect, lay around all day and drink beer and eat snacks and watch t.v. and get paid for it???? Don't think life works that way, does it????

I think its time for the people to stop the flow of monies into that area and tell the Gov and Mayor find your people jobs there and start paying them from your own budget...and fix your state and city up yourself....a little goes along ways....

Okay. I live in tornado alley. We have had entire towns wiped out.

And you know what people do? They rebuild. They take their insurance money, if they own a house, and they buy or build another one.

If they lived in apartments, they get another one. If they owned a business, they start from scratch.

Why is it that months later, we are still hearing of people in NO who just can't get it together? Who have to have the taxpayers supply them with trailers to live in? Why don't you hear about all the other states that were hit with the same storm, whining and complaining about how little the gubmint is doing? Why is it that other communities bounce back, pull together, help each other out, after a disaster?

Truth be told, I am sick and tired of hearing about all these people who are still waiting for the government, i.e. every other American who works and pays taxes, to bail them out.

Thousands still living in hotels at the governments expense, still squatting in other states, not working.

I have compassion for those who lose everything in a disaster. What I do not have is compassion for those who are still stiing on their butts months later, calling themselves victims.

I guess because I have never been on that program it slipped my mind that there was even one....when I was sick and out of a job, I worked 3 jobs when I got on my feet to catch up all my bills...I just thought other people did the same thing....(stupid me)

Well, you would be what is called "responsible".

There are a whole lot of people out there who refuse to do whatever it takes to make it. It's too hard.

Small towns are one thing however, the area destroyed by both Katrina and Rita is bigger than Great Britain. It's also more densely populated unlike most areas in tornado alley.

There aren't many apartments available. There aren't many houses available. Had Rita not struck 3 weeks later in the southwest corner of the state destroying Cameron Parish and severely damaging Calcasieu and Vermillion Parishes things wouldn't be so bad in regards to finding adequate housing. In areas that were not hit by the hurricanes any available housing was snatched up and all available apartments to boot.

www.usatoday.com/money/economy/housing/2005-10-05-katrina-housing-usat_x.htm

Also insurance companies are low balling damage estimates and dragging their feet in paying out claims.

Well, I would rather have them homeless than endanger my family. However, they could screen these people couldn't they?

can one imagine the condition of the trailers when (if) they find permanent housing?

"I don't see any of them working a full 8-5 job; I don't see any of them paying their bills, they cry when the Gov. said you got so many days to find somewhere else to live, we're cutting off the flow of monies.... "

Not all of us! I and my neighbors on Clematis and Verbena Street in NOLA have tried to reclaim what Katrina has left behind - shattered lives and damaged homes.

We work to rebuild, and we hope for a better future. Most of my neighbors work a 9-5, though some have forever lost their Pre-K jobs. We take our free cheese when we can get it - and all shout "GOD bless the AMERICAN RED CROSS" for the daily hot meals.

Most of you Freeper's have no clue what it is to exist in this type environment. I reclaimed the filth and wreckage that was my home late in October, and - in two weeks was able to make three (upstairs, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen) rooms livable by a REAL man's (very low) standards. November 14th I had a Left Total Hip Replacement at Touro Hospital, and 4 day later was back in my home living on my Y2K stuff! FEMA has helped me some - and State Farm is about to come across with honest policy cash!

Mostly it was my neighbors and me working to right a horrific, but naturally occurring event.

The guys and gals up and down my neighborhood woking to rebuild - make me weep with pride, for they are the salt of the Earth!

You are not alone in doing the dirty nasty work. You guys just don't get any press because it doesn't meet the MSM agenda.

There's several NOLA area freepers doing just what you are so keep up the good work and keep us informed on the facts. My area got smacked by Rita so I do understand what you are going through.

"Okay. I live in tornado alley. We have had entire towns wiped out."

This is a little different. You can get onto I-10 beginning at Mobile and drive west for four hours at 70 mph and still be in hurricane ravaged areas.
We have 51,000 'evacuees' here in Mobile county (pop: 472,000) from points west and some locals in Bayou La Batre spent Christmas in tents, these are hard working fisher people.

It seems that a lot of people think only the 'welfare' folks in NO were affected.

I have in-laws who lived in a renovated three-story old house in the Garden District of New Orleans (yes, they're rich, a doctor and a lawyer) who just got back into their house two days before Christmas and they weren't even flooded. They could not come back due to lack of utilities (still no phone) and their roof was damaged.

Not everybody affected by the hurricanes are what you have been seeing on tv. Many of them are hard working people from the outlying areas who need somewhere to live temporarily while they rebuild.

That is not what I think. I am talking about the people who are waiting around for the government to supply them with trailers.

I don't hear any whining from Alabama or Mississippi. Don't even hear any whining from business owners in NO. Just the folks who won't help themselves.

You are the folks who are to be commended. You are true Americans who make the best of it, who get down and WORK to reclaim your lives.

Good for you.

Don't be surprised if these trailer ranches become the permanent housing.

My perspective is fine, but thank you for your concern.
At no point have I stated that no one deserves a place to live.
The whole country has bent over backward and still there is constant griping and 'woe is me' mentality.
We're sick of it.

Just returned from spending the Christmas holidays in Dallas, and read in the "Dallas Morning News" about the increase in the homicides in Houston. The article said several homicides were confirmed as being committed by Katrina evacuees, and many others suspected, but not confirmed, as same.

We were also in Lake Charles, Louisiana and west Texas, and saw the destruction from Hurricane Rita firsthand, including that our relatives suffered. So, I feel bad for the good people the hurricanes affected, but wouldn't want the bad apples in my back yard either.
