This whole episode will only increase support for new pipelines to bypass unstable countries like Ukraine. Ukraine is essentially holding western Europe hostage with their childish political games. I bet we will now see a second Black Sea pipeline to route gas towards SE Europe and on to Italy being proposed very soon.

The lesson to be taken to the bank is not to trust the Russians.

Because Russians don't like thiefs and welfare beggers.

Then more than quadrupled - say, fifty-folded. The Russians could charge whatever they want for their gas - fair enough, but by the same logic only the sky is the limit for what the Ukrainians could charge for the rights of transit of the stuff over their territory. Baltic bypass pipeline is an excellent solution to the whole mess, but until it is ready [something like 4 years], some accommodation will have to be reached.

Whatever. Russian will turn to east then. China another good buyer.
EC will teach sense to ukranian stupid assholes or will live without russian gas until NEP will be ready.

Anyone in Russia anger now with impudity with which those ukarnian thives steal russian gas transit. Today they stole about 18%.
I'm wholeheartly (and 99% of russians) for total cease of transit through Ukarine until Europe teach Ukraine some civil manners. Like "to steal is wrong".

Answer will be "stolen in Ukraine". So what? Gazprom has no influence in Ukraine which steals your gas.

hmm Why I trust more to Ukraine than Russia. I read that you Russians started to steal Turkmen gas for Ukraine and that you sending less European gas that you should. What is the conclusion, you cannot accuse somebody that he is stealing something if you are thieve themselves.

Poland and other customers are better to help Russia to make order at trasportaion routes OR stop whole gas delivery to Europe. Use coal until North Baltic pipeline will be operational.

Yes as you noticed we have a lot of coal, something is telling me that Russian will soon eat their gas and oil because we will stop to be interested to buy it :)

Trust whoever you like. Gas was stolen during transit through Ukarine. Period.

NOW we BOTH should to make order along pipeline too ensure safety of gas transit OR we tell each other good buy for few years until NEP will be ready.

Russia will live without gas sells for few years. Poland may use her coal or what ever you want.

Thanks Ukraine for this crisis.

I'm not joking now. Dead serious.

Lucacz I tell you sincerely. To HELL with such "little brothers" like damn ukranians. Thieves who stoles from me are NOT my brothers anymore.
So if you want your Lviv back you have full my support.

I always believed that the Russians and the Chinese richly deserve each other, and that it is [or would be] a "marriage made in heaven". I think I held this opinion at least since the times in my distant youth when they were drumming marxian texts in us. Marx used to call Russia "asiatic despotism", you know. Thus, mutual attraction of asiatic despotisms [be it with the Chinese or the Uzbeks] is only to be expected. [Even Karl Marx knew a few things!] But anyway, building or expanding the pipelines to China or Pacific will also take several years. It would be good for everybody concerned if the alternative energetics [coal, biomass, or nuclear-based] is built in the former communist states during that period.

Pragmatic Putin's approach may be, but it's shortsighted and unfortunate for all concerned.

I didn't know commies from Ukraine ruled the Soviet Union for 30 years, but I know Stalin deliberately starved to death more than a hundred million Ukrainians. The point is that was then, this is now and there's a better, more prosperous way for everyone. Bullying your neighbors generally foments anger and some form of revenge down the line. God knows Russians have had a tough time since the collapse of the Soviet Union. I wish things were different, but change takes trust, time and effort. Putin's job isn't easy and this squabble over Russian gas won't help matters.

I don't know exactly but I just think that the history of Soviet Union has to be teached throughly or people wouldn't know what happened in 20th century.
If man mixed Russia and Soviet Union I'd say that he missed whole epoch in his education.
SO in 20th century wouldn't you mix Britain and British Empire?
What if indian from India cease high power by revolt against britons in London and after Civil war and his elite will consists of indians, nepaliand, birmanians, jamaikians and other former sujects from colonies (possible scenario given ethnic poll in London), but not englishmen.
Now someone tell you that it is still Great Britain and they are all britons since they sit in London.
I would laugh on it. Would you?

"The education is the strength".

We must remember that the rates the Ukraine pays now are extremely lower than the open market rates. Of course many pipelines pass thru the Ukraine so there is a capitalist solution to this mess....
