NEW YORK -- There was more to celebrate than the ball dropping in Times Square for Dick Clark _ the personality who's been ringing in the New Year for decades made his first television appearance since a stroke in late 2004.
Clark, sitting behind a desk with the street scene in the background, sounded hoarse and occasionally was hard to understand, but he said, "I wouldn't have missed this for the world."
"Last year I had a stroke," he explained. "It left me in bad shape. I had to teach myself how to walk and talk again. It's been a long, hard fight. My speech is not perfect but I'm getting there."

Linda Ronstadt covers two time zones, and Stevie Nicks still looks hot.
I totally disagree with you. I was glad to see Dick Clark again.. Give the man credit for doing his rehab and fighting back like he has.
His speech was very slow, and deliberate...but I give the man credit for being there. I can only imagine the struggles he has gone through to bring him to this point.
Don't be a jerk....your family members and friends could be fighting a stroke some day.
Happy New Year to Dick Clark and ALL!
His eyes did not move or blink either. He may be visually impaired and have the words relayed to him via earpiece instead of teleprompter.
Dick was terrible. But there is something to be said for tradition and Dick on New Year's is a tradition. So, I say let him stay till he wants to go.
Happy New Year Freepers! Happy New Year Dick Clark! You did a great job tonight as always and the vibrance of your spirit was felt with each piece of confetti glittering with hope in the New York sky!
So what's your point? So what if he does?
Good Lord, some of you folks on this board are so callous it disgusts me......
Guess you've never had a family member who has had a stroke..... lucky you.
Walk a mile in a stroke victim's shoes....and then make your smartass comments.
Dick Clark should not have been on tonight.
... or Carson Daly either.
Happy New year!!!!
It's just now on West Coast! Good for him for making whatever attempt it is he's making. And BAH! To the creeps who think people who aren't 100% should just go hide in darkness.
Shame on ABC for using doctored promo material and pandering to Clark's ego just to capture share.
My guess is you weren't disappointed. I sure wasn't.
Yikes ! She's a lot more attractive than my w...
That would have been a better way of dealing with the situation.
She'll never drown.
Not very nice.

I think to draw a conclusion, Dick's appearance last night, as it was, may just be a needed lesson to all of us out here that all people do get old indeed, and in life some must fight through impairmnets such as Dick has presently.
Here's hoping his appearance last night shone some degree of light on the troubles that sometimes lie ahead and that require hard work, care, and understanding.
Then why couldn't I find a channel with "Guy Lombaro and the Royal Canadians at the Waldorf Astoria"?
