A Day in the Life of President Bush (12/31/05): New Year's Memories
White House ^ | 12/31/05

Posted on 12/31/2005 3:01:38 PM PST by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush, the First Lady, the dogs and cat, and their family are spending the New Year's holiday at their Texas ranch.

On this New Year's Eve, 2005, although mindful of those who will not continue the journey with us into 2006, it seemed to me we should celebrate happy times. That is the theme of this last Dose thread of 2005.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, to all. May your 2006 be healthy, happy and full of love.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the first Inaugural Address of President George W. Bush, January 20, 2001.

Americans are generous and strong and decent, not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.

After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''

Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.

We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.

Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.

This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.

Thanks for your thoughts about FIL. mr.h just called. He said they're doing lots of tests and perhaps will know more in a few hours.

***Egg salad is the same as above but with hard boiled eggs sliced or cut in half. Egg mayonnaise is chopped up egg mixed with mayonnaise or salad cream.

Churchill had it right about our language.***

YUP! He sure did.

I've had English Egg Mayonnaise at an English Tea Shop in California, and as you say, it's chopped up egg with mayo. So, that leads to this question: Do you ever have ham (with fat removed) chopped up and mixed with mayo? On bread or crackers, of course.

I feel for your husband I can remember waiting for tests with mum but of course she was more frail than your FIL so things like tract tube etc were not viable options.

Yes you can buy that in a supermarket our German supermarket Lidl sells it in fact they call it meat salad but in normal everyday usage you would not call that a ham salad.

I have never known anyone chop ham up and mix like you said but everyone is different and with people traveling more and seeing different food then I would think some do.

Most people in Britain though love cold ham either that you have cooked yourself or what you buy in the supermarket.

Cold meat and pickles at Christmas is a traditional Boxing Day fare or even supper on Christmas Day. A lot of people prefer this to the hot turkey or beef on Christmas Day.

The one exception is potato salad that is mayo or salad cream with either chives or parsley.
