A Day in the Life of President Bush (12/31/05): New Year's Memories
White House ^ | 12/31/05

Posted on 12/31/2005 3:01:38 PM PST by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush, the First Lady, the dogs and cat, and their family are spending the New Year's holiday at their Texas ranch.

On this New Year's Eve, 2005, although mindful of those who will not continue the journey with us into 2006, it seemed to me we should celebrate happy times. That is the theme of this last Dose thread of 2005.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, to all. May your 2006 be healthy, happy and full of love.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the first Inaugural Address of President George W. Bush, January 20, 2001.

Americans are generous and strong and decent, not because we believe in ourselves, but because we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.

After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''

Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.

We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.

Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.

This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.

These "on the dot" posts tonight are a little Twilight Zone-ish! (can you tell I spent the rainy day watching the Twilight Zone marathon? heh)

How do the 2 dogs get on or do they ignore each other?

It's very interesting. Susie is a pit bull who I found in my company's parking lot in 2000. She adores me but is shy with other people. She has never shown the slightest aggression, but I always kept her separated from my other dogs. She slept in my bedroom, but in a crate.

Now that the old dogs are gone, Sue has moved up to top dog and gets to sleep on my bed, and Ricky has his own crate. Ricky actually loves the crate because it seems to make him feel secure. Anyway, twice I must have not quite latched it, and Ricky quietly came on the bed while Sue was there with me, and she did nothing.

Even so, I take no chances and immediately put him back in his crate for safety.

Sue also has an interesting relationship with the cat. As cats will do, Kitty will sometimes deliberately taunt the dog. She has batted at Sue a number of times, but the dog pretends to go after her yet never opens her mouth to bite. If Sue were so inclined, she could kill the small animals in a flash, but has never made such a move. Nevertheless, I make it a point to try to keep her apart from the others.

When snugs did it, I thought she might have been waiting for that exact moment to hit post. But on reflection, I realized no one could control when something posts exactly to the second due to the time it takes for a packet of data to travel over the internet. It might seem instantaneous to us, but it isn't really.

I first thought you were waiting to hit post at midnight, but then realized it was just a stroke of luck that your post appeared exactly at midnight to the second. It is interesting that both you and Rintense did it in different time zones. Kind of fun.

Although all other oaths of office for elected officials in the U.S., only the presidential Oath of Office is mandated by the Constitution:

Very true. However the Constitution does mandate those other oaths be taken, and specifies the basic content. The Presidential oath is in Art. II section 1.

Art. VI, last sentence states:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Too bad so many of the above mentioned legislators, executive and judicial officers don't understand, or at least follow, the oath to "support and defend the Constitution".

The enlisted military oath is slightly different, and is not mandated by the Constitution.

Cynic that I am, I think all of them understand their oaths, but they don't give a fig what it says.

Happy New Year to you and your "brood"!

As cats will do, Kitty will sometimes deliberately taunt the dog.

My big, brave, Fluffy (all black, long fur kitty) fights the dog, but only through the glass in the door! I always knew she was trying to get the dog in trouble! LOL

I hope the rain stops just long enough for the parade.

Actually it isn't hard at all. They have their separate crates, both in the house and in my van. They go for separate walks. They eat in different rooms. The little one surprised me when I first brought him home, because he actually likes being in a crate. He puts himself to bed at night. He eats, does his business and makes a bee-line for his crate.

Whoever had him before must have crated him sometime.

I hope the rain stops just long enough for the parade.

My ex used to work the parade as a reserve L.A. County deputy sheriff, so I went up with him several times. Being from the New York City metro area, I sometimes get tired of the constant sunshine here, so I wish it would rain more. If it rains on the parade tomorrow, I would like it, but realize all those people lined up along the route would hate it. The ones up there camped out tonight are having a very cold, wet night. Probably lots of booze being passed around.
