PBS's Tavis Smiley sandbagged NYT's Krugman
Tavis Smiley's PBS show (hope not a rerun) | 30 Dec | self

Posted on 12/30/2005 7:29:40 PM PST by flowerplough

"...Ubb, ...dub, well, I'd raise taxes..., umm...".

Krugman sounded a little like Ted Kennedy without the Brahmin when Smiley, smiling, asked him something like, "Well, you're the New York Times' columnist, the heavy hitter, but any one of us can write a column and put it out there. Anyone can tell us what's wrong. What would you do if you could, Mr. Princeton Professor of Economics, how would you fix our government?"

Don't watch enough TV to know if this interview was stale, and searched "Krugman" here before posting- if it ain't news to you, it is to me. I revelled in Krugman shifty-eyed shock; looked like he might have been expecting only CNN-ish softballs.

Great job, Paul! Raise my taxes! Why don't you confiscate my guns, too, while you're at it! Now that you've articulated your Economic Program for America so well, you should run for office. I'd stand in line to vote for you, right after I got done voting to re-elect President "I'll Raise you Taxes" Mondale and Senator Hillary "We're Going to Take Things Away From You for the Common Good" Clunkton.

Any economist who looks at the US economic record under Bush and says "Things are bad right now, but higher taxes will fix it" is not a real economist. Such a person is just a weak-minded, lying Marxist. Hello Paul Krugman.

That's not a sandbag. That's a softball.

Krugman simply wants to raise taxes.

That was a softball.

It shows how far gone the left is, and how utterly devoid of ideas or anything with merit, that simply asking a sitting economics professor for his public policy recommendations is considered a hard question.

If he is a liberal.

Careful with saying Krugman's a Marxist. A few years ago, it was Krugman v. O'Reilly [on a Tim "My mind's gone too" Russert show].
O'Reilly said Krugman was a socialist. Krugman denied it. O'Reilly then said "quasi-socialist". Krugman responded
"Then you are a quasi-murderer".

Go figure.

Look, Krugman is simply a know-nothing leftist who revels in class warfare.
He is like many of my lefty friends who refuse to acknowledge that lower taxes stimulate economies and benefit all.
They are all obsessed with skewering the golden goose.

I can't remember Krugman being right about anything.

Listen to the entire program??? Maybe I could get my somewhat athletic daughter to whip half-empty beer cans at my head for a coupla hours instead. Pro'ly more relaxing. But, seriously, thanks for the research. Guess I shoulda realized that those two wouldn't have been "working" the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. I was clicking channels & checked occasionally to try to see if that PK was as far gone as I'd read, caught enough to confirm that he's about mostly bluster and conceit. And I notice another typo this morning, too. There goes my chance at a paid FR internship...

Proof of an axiom my old college finance professor used to quote:

"Anyone can sit on the sidelines and criticize. Let's see them come up with a better solution."

If Smiley wasn't a liberal, he wouldn't have the job he does. As her sex helped old Babwa Wawa overcome her difficulties with the letters r, l, and w at ABC, so skin also elevates PBS's chatter-jive Tavis. I'd guess that liberal Tavis found himself surprisingly, personally annoyed with conceited, liberal, blowhard Krugman and decided give him a little hanging rope. All water under the bridge, anyway (oops, another Kennedy allusion), as BNelson44 has pointed out that it was an old show.

RE: I can't remember Krugman being right about anything...
Exactly. I stopped reading him a few years ago, when I realized I had never agreed with a single statement he wrote. He is the most factually challenged Times columnist, which is saying something considering the competition. Note that Krugman's book, a collection of his columns, omitted some of his more obvious incorrect predictions.

Even the NYT's ombudsman agrees with you. He has written several pieces about Krugman's refusal to publish corrections of what amount to egregious errors.

Now, I'm not a large woman, just a bit over 5 feet tall. But I really do believe I could whup Krugman's butt.

I love telling my Father-in-Law, who believes every word out that ferret-faced idiot, that I'd bet that within 5 minutes I could Krugman crying like a little girl!!
