Iraqi prison abuse figure(Lynndie England) hurt in brig at Miramar

Lynndie England, the soldier convicted of abusing Iraqi detainees, was seriously burned in a prison kitchen accident at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, her mother said yesterday.

England, who was pictured holding a leash to a naked and hooded Iraqi inmate at the Abu Ghraib prison, was sentenced in September to three years for her part in the abuse scandal, which sparked worldwide outrage.

She has since been confined at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar, which is on the base.

The brig is the Department of Defense's only prison designated for women, said Brewster Schenck, a spokesman for the facility. About 50 to 60 female inmates live there, along with 230 male inmates housed in separate quarters, he said.

England works in the prison's kitchen, where she suffered second-and possibly third-degree burns from being splattered with grease over her chest as she removed chickens from a tall oven, said her mother, Terrie England.

"She was in severe pain," the mother said of the Dec. 14 incident. "Everybody in the prison heard the scream."

Terrie England, who is caring for her daughter's infant during the incarceration, faulted prison officials for not giving better treatment during a visit to the emergency room.

"They gave her nothing," she said. "When this happened, I was furious. . . . To think they give you nothing for pain."

Schenck confirmed that England had been assigned to the kitchen, where inmates prepare and serve food, mostly for other prisoners.

He declined to discuss the accident or her medical condition, but disputed allegations of inadequate treatment for the burns.

"Those were the comments of a mother who was worried about her daughter, but they are not accurate," Schenck said.

Terrie England said the arrival of her daughter at the San Diego facility caused much curiosity, including requests for autographs.

"It wasn't just prisoners," she said. "It was guards and everything."

She added that her daughter had been taking a Bible prayer class in prison and calling home about once a week.

In September, England blamed her involvement in the Abu Ghraib scandal on then-lover Charles Graner, who is serving a 10-year sentence on abuse charges and is the father of her baby.

The brig, encompassing 23 acres, was built in 1989 at a cost of nearly $17 million. The 208,000-square-foot facility can house up to 400 prisoners and is staffed by 31 civilian and 173 military personnel, according to the brig's Web site.

Here's hoping it is a Red Line Brig.

Did she actually abuse them or simply pose for pictures? I know that some may consider that abuse but what I am asking is did she physically hit, burn, kick anyone? Thanks!

Good point again. Its more American torture with panties on the head vs Muslim torture of no head.

McCain, still a damned fool.

Good riddance. She and her likes seriously damaged our reputation in Iraq.

I had no idea she was here. How strange there wasn't more media coverage - or maybe I missed it as I watch zero local news aside from the weather.

500 sq. ft. per prisoner. Does each one get a 3 room suite? And since it is only 3/4 full, they should have lots of spare room.

She and her boyfriend did that stuff on their own. That wasn't some policy of our military they were dishing out, so how is she a fall guy?
She was just a jerk.

She doesn't look too bad after the burns either, she got out of that pretty well.

I just think that the higher ups looked the other way. When the pictures came out, action had to be taken. I don't say she is guiltless, I just think thast the whole situation stemmed from a larger problem. If those pictures hadn't gone public, she would still be in the military now.

What makes YOU think the higher ups looked the other way when facts all say the exact opposite?

Are you not aware that all these people were arrested and going toward a trial well before the press got the story or any pictures in the news?

The military reacted appropriately to what the bad folks did.
In every military conflict there are always a few idiots and they were dealt with.

So these people were already in jail awaiting trial before pictures were run by the press.

Thought they sentenced her to incarceration, not incineration.

Some people will do anything to keep their name in the news.

Maybe she did it on purpose as a ploy to qualify for free plastic surgery.
If she did, she is still screwed...they can only 'reconstruct', and she wasn't destructed; she was BORN ugly.

LOL - They must have been disappointed when all they got for an autograph was a big 'X". IMO this trailer trash thing should just be ignored - She and her other weirdo friends damaged us in Iraq and gave fuel to the wailing of anti-Military elements here at home.
