SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) -- Lynndie England, the U.S. soldier who posed for some of the most infamous pictures of detainee abuse at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison, suffered burns at the prison where she is serving her sentence, her family said Friday.
England was injured about three weeks ago in a kitchen mishap at Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar, said her father, Kenneth England, from his home in West Virginia.
The young reservist was reaching for a pan with chicken when grease splattered on her neck and chest, Kenneth England said. She was taken to the hospital, where they told her to put ice on it. She later had to ask for burn cream.
"When it happened, she didn't get nothing," her father said.
He last spoke with his daughter on Christmas, when she told him she was doing better. He said he expected to hear from her this weekend.
"As far as I know, she's doing fine," Kenneth England said.
A message left with the Navy was not immediately returned.
England, who was convicted of six counts involving prisoner mistreatment, was shown posing with a pyramid of naked detainees and pointing at the genitals of a prisoner while a cigarette hangs from the corner of her mouth. The photos were among several that sparked outrage and severely damaged America's image in the Muslim world.
England blamed the abuse on reputed abuse ringleader Pvt. Charles Graner Jr., whom she said took advantage of her love and trust while deployed in Iraq. Graner was sentenced to 10 years.
Do you have a link to that thread? Didn't realize this was a dupe and there are probably some pretty comments there.
"She later had to ask for burn cream"
I can't imagine the trama that poor girl must be going through.
/bleeding heart
This happened on her watch and this unsupervised soldier is punished so severely.
The damage was done to America by our own media.
""When it happened, she didn't get nothing," her father said. "
Well, then. It don't look like Lyndie got no good edumacation from her dad, does it?
2 of them. Must have gotten pulled, 'cause I posted to both, and neither are in my comment history.
One got real ugly, real fast. Late-night dumb@ss comments drew lots of fire.
Hooray for bad karma!
The guard unit headquartered in my hometown was transferred into Abu Ghraib a few days before the story broke. They were attacked by mortars almost every day from the time the reports appeared in the media until the time they left Iraq. According to the soldiers I've spoken with, a lot of these mortar rounds landed among the prisoner population, because they had a lot of the non-terrorist offenders housed in tents in various courtyards within the prison complex.
These people put our troops in danger from combat that wouldn't have happened otherwise and got Iraqis killed and wounded because they wanted to indulge their playground bully urges and/or get their rocks off. They deserve prison, in fact, they deserve lots of prison. So have a nice cup of shut the hell up, because you have no idea in the world what their stupidity, malice and perversion have cost us.
As despicable as Karpinski is, I have no problem imagining this all going on without any officer's knowledge. I've talked to troops who were at Abu Ghraib, and they said it would be so easy to keep up appearances even if an officer showed up at an inopportune time that no one outside the conspiracy can be held responsible.
True, but the soldiers who did the deeds should still be punished. They just should have been punished quietly.
Not that I'm defending Karpinski, who is a moral moron, but please see my post 31 for an outline of the consequences of Graner and England's actions, and 33 for a note on why the Sergeants and Lieutenants are not part of the problem. I can elaborate on that if necessary.
She was probably lighting a smoke with the burner the pan was cooking on.
Poor L. England....you know what they say....sh*t rolls down hill.
I got a paper cut at work. Should I call my lawyer? Oh, wait - I work for lawyers - never mind. LOL
I think both Lindie and Gardner are made for each other and to think they have to raise a child...gives me chills. I mean the girl acted like a complete idiot when talking with the media and that I believe that she was one of the main reason this story went as far as it did. If there were some articulate, educated and prettier looking females, I really believe this would not have gone as far. People were upset that she presented herself in such a horrible way. I listened to her talking to the press and it was hardly understandable.
Not interested. Even if you paid me to take the scumbag.
