"South Park" Parked by Complaints

Following the Dec. 7 season finale of South Park, titled "Bloody Mary," the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights slammed the network for its irreverent portrayal of church icons and sought to block the episode from being rebroadcast.

It appears the group may have met with success. A repeat of the finale was scheduled to air Wednesday night, but was seemingly pulled from the Comedy Central lineup without explanation.

In the episode, a statue of the Virgin Mary is believed to be bleeding from its rear end, inspiring faithful parishioners to flock from miles around to be healed by the miraculous blood.

Seems the market cleaned up this problem all by itself.

Comedy Central seemingly decided that continuing to air this episode would negatively effect its bottom line.

If in the future there is enough demand for it to be re-aired, I'm sure it will.

The system works.

It's win-win for Comedy Central. They pull this rerun to satisfy the Catholic League, and then in a year or so, the DVD sales go through the roof when they include the "banned episode".

"You should read some history."

When will the mass expulsions start due to this cartoon? If you would be so kind as to draw on your historical knowledge.

I would be interested to know if the Catholic League has protested the multitude of episodes that portray Jesus as a joke or just the ones that make fun of Catholicism.

If we started killing everyone that South Park made fun of, there wouldn't be anyone left on the planet.

. . . the people getting their panties in a knot miss the whole point of the episode. It's not making fun of Catholics, it's making fun of people who worship "miraculous" idols. There have been plenty of stories recently about people worshipping images of Mary, in grilled cheese, or weeping statues, and people flock to them.

Eventually, Pope Benedict XVI is called in to investigate, whereupon he determines that the statue is actually menstruating and thus is nothing special.

"A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle," the pope declares in the episode. "Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time."

Appears to be rather rude and crude to me.

If I were a devout Christian, I'd be ticked off too.  IMHO, they have a real good reason for being appalled and disgusted.

Mocking their knotted panties is rather lame.

Change the channel if you don't like what you see, and vote with your eyes.

You don't need to see it to condemn it.  Standing up for your beliefs is better than flipping channels and remaining silent.  The tension between the two extremes will eventually produce the right course.

Which episodes in particular portray Jesus as a joke?

"...it was ridiculing people who worship idols..."

Even if you believe that, people who worship G-d and another (as a concept) are closer than Atheists and are to be respected. Besides, you won't find a willing foreign student of your beliefs (even if they ask without you proselytizing, which is when it becomes your duty) by making them angry with such nasty nonsense.

Probably just the ones that directly cite the church.

Victimization has become a rallying cry for all kinds of groups -- left, right and center. Reading through my direct mail solicitations, 8 out of 10 times they're raising money to "fight" something or other.

If this catches on, people all over America will not watch programs they don't enjoy. It could change television as we know it.

Thats not very likely. There will always be those who actively seek out things to disturb them so they can pound their breasts and caterwaul about how morally pure they are for their indignation. It's childish, but an all too common character flaw in those with a superiority complex.

I laugh at and then dismiss them, the publicly trumpeted outrage of strangers is the only thing with less value than a politicians promise.

Getting a bit off topic, but I did find it interesting that the people who were promoting the fight against the "War on Christmas" always seemed to have a book or DVD to sell.

Somewhere there is someone doing something that I don't approve of and I intend to find out who they are and what they are doing and put an end to it.

Half of the so-called 'leaders' of the conservative movement are nothing but hucksters and salesmen.

The same is true for the liberal movement, naturally.

Fighting for something or other is now big business.

I've stopped giving to charities who are asking for cash to fight something. I don't want charities fighting, I want them out doing going in the world.

Interesting comment for someone on a conservative site. Is this a typical view held by "South Park Republicans?" Care to name those conservative leaders you say are nothing but hucksters and salesmen?

You have a bright future in the Ministry of Virtue and Vice. Just remember anything not forbidden is mandatory and you'll go quite far.

And apparently the South Park apologists think that is humorous. Unbelievable.

Some of them sell books. Some of them sell their radio shows.

The really ballsy ones sell their own books on their own radio shows.

You really are a barrel of laughs, aren't you? I bet everyone just begged to sit next to you during the family Christmas lunch. It's quite simple. If you don't like South Park, don't watch it.
