HAWAII, Dec. 29, 2005 — Rachel Cambra couldn't wait to see the look on her 14-year-old son's face when he opened a very special present on Christmas morning.

The Mililani, Hawaii, woman had saved up to surprise her son with what he wanted most for the holiday, a new Apple iPod with video.

Surprised he was, and so was Cambra. When her son opened the box for the high-tech toy, he discovered the iPod that should have been there wasn't. It had apparently been replaced with some kind of mystery meat.

Methinks somebody either did a very nasty joke or someone inside the Wal-Mart distribution warehouse deliberately switched a real iPod and all its accessories with something that weighed the same so it escaped scrutiny by Wal-Mart managers or security.

If I were Steve Jobs I would personally try to contact the family in question and send by FedEx overnight to the family a brand new iPod 30 GB along with a US$100 iTunes Music Store gift card gratis.

No desert til you eat your iPod.

or:

It plays all your favorite songs, AND it tastes great, too!

It should be Walmart, not Steve Jobs sending the iPod.

Remember those Wendy's commercials that said "Where's the beef?" Now we know!

Lovely thought, but I think it should be Wal-Mart doing the offering. They sold the product.

I doubt Bill Gates would offer anyone a free X-Box if they cracked open its container and found chopped liver.

EEERRT. Wrong answer.

Apple refers to all of their vendors as "resellers" for a reason ;o)

Let's see ... The product is shipped, from the factory in a shrink-wrapped box.

Did thay buy one without the protective cover?

I think I smell a finger in the Wendy's burger, or a family prankster.

From the story...

He says Cambra will be given a new iPod for her son from the very next shipment the store receives.

Oh?

Quoting from the article:
Dan Fogleman, a spokesman for Wal-Mart, said it did appear that the package was sealed and has contacted Apple about the matter.

He says Cambra will be given a new iPod for her son from the very next shipment the store receives.

No one from Apple was available for comment.

"Sue the hell of out Wal-Mart."

I dunno - I'm starting to think this is exactly what Someone Out There wants to have happen.

I bought a prepaid cell phone at W*M yesterday that had also been tampered with (lucky the clerk caught it).

I live in TX, not HI.

I've seen other posts in the W*M threads in here recently complaining of the same thing. Has anyone heard of someone organizing this sort of sabotage recently?
