Louisiana sends National Guard to help with Texas fires

BATON ROUGE -- A firefighting crew from the Louisiana National Guard on Thursday headed to Texas to help with the ongoing battle against wildfires that have charred more than 100 homes and killed four in that state and Oklahoma.

Three UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters rigged with firefighting water buckets departed Louisiana early Thursday for Grand Prairie, Texas, to help fight the fires which swept across nearly 20,000 acres in the two states.

"I am proud to send the very capable members and resources of the Louisiana National Guard to support our neighbors in Texas," said Gov. Kathleen Blanco in a news release. "The people of Texas and the Texas National Guard quickly came to Louisiana's aid when we needed it most. This support is one of the many ways we want to let our friends in Texas know that we will never forget their generosity to us."

The helicopters, based with the Guard's 1/244th Aviation Battalion, each will have a crew of six.

Texas opened its doors to thousands of evacuees fleeing Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"We had such an outpouring of support from other states during our recovery from the hurricanes. This is what the National Guard is all about," said Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Landreneau, the adjutant general of the Louisiana National Guard.

No members of the neckbolt brigade have blamed Bush and his "lumber company" yet. I'm shocked.

Props to those serving!

Well of course. That is something that we always do. We have our faults but we do help our fellow citizens out when they need help.

It's kind of ironic really. We nearly drowned and they are burning up because of a severe drought. If we could figure out how to balance out the elements it would be paradise. ;)

I thank them for their generosity and help. No rain in sight, and more wind and record temperatures are on the way. We need all the help we can get.

BAGHDAD, Sept. 1 -- The 3,700 Louisiana National Guard members in Iraq will begin heading home within about a week as part of normal troop rotations, but there are no mass Guard movements back to the United States planned to aid hurricane relief, U.S. military officials in Baghdad said Thursday.

That one backfired on Miz Mary. We do have a lot of troops serving in Iraq but they knew what they were getting into when they signed up. We had plenty at home. Once again the DNC miscalculated.

I pray for those in the path of the fires. May they get some much needed rain.

Actually, there's no mention here that there are thousands of TEXAS National Guardsmen serving overseas right now. Of course, they're in Kosovo - Clinton's neverending war - not Iraq.

What's this? Wildfires? Well, I'd better not hear about any of MY tax dollars going to help those people in Texas. Not one damn dime, nope. Let 'em fend for themselves. Why would anyone live in areas prone to natural disaster anyway? They're just getting what they deserve. This whole thing is a media concoction. Blah blah blah etc. etc. etc. moan moan moan....

You are most welcomed. Are you in the danger zone? I remember when I lived in Waikoloa, HI having to deal with those pesky brush fires. One minute everything was fine the next all hell broke loose.

Thank goodness for all of the firemen, National Guard, Coast Guard, police officers, and paramedics, etc. They put their lives at stake to save others. I for one appreciate all they do.
