Read Graham Hancock's book "Sign and the Seal". interesting argument. If you are watching the Discovery Channel and its a guy studying ancient history and acheology with a british accent, chances are it's Hancock.

The Ark was constructed to store the pieces of the original tablets brought down from Siani by Moses. God spoke to the Israelites from a ball of fire appearinf between the two cherubim on top.

Gettin' a little hazy here, but the Ark is said to have destroyed whole armies when carried by the Israelites against their enemies.

Time for me to take another run through the Old Testament!

Regards,

Since the New Covenant is the completion and unfolding of the Old Covenant (not its replacement), I think the Ark would have a place as a Christian relic...not simply a neat historical old thing. It was after all where the very center of the presence of God for centuries resided on earth.

Of course it depends on what you mean by "relic." Not being Roman Catholic, I don't buy that things associated with particular saints give off holy power (making one's prayers more effective, for example). However, even the Bible indicates that the bones of a prophet actually raised someone back to life (2 Kings 13:21)...so, maybe we Protestants should re-think some of this relic theology.

I've seen several program on the Discovery channel and on the History channel dealing with this.

I saw that phony-baloney show with the fake Indiana Jones a few months ago. It led off with "we're going to excavate the truth!" and ended with "who knows if it's in there, but it doesn't really matter if you believe it is."

Silly show.

And, by the way, nothing's in there - it's religious hocus-pocus.

"IMHO, the most likely scenario is that the Ark was destroyed (the gold peeled off, the wood burned) when "Shishak" sacked Jerusalem, with a possibility that it was carried off as booty to Egypt. I don't think it was ever referenced in the Scriptures -- except in the past tense -- after "Shishak"."

the curiousity of the possibility that the ark was captured was that it went wihtout a bang. It simply vanishes from history with nary a whimpler. It had clearly demonstrated offensive capabilities, and could have made problems that WOULD have made written contemporary records, if the experiences of the philistines are any guide when they stole/took it.

Reading about the ark and its various functions/actions is like reading science fiction in reverse - from the point of a bronze-age people dealing with an advanced artifact with various powers, some of which make more sense now (sparks between the 2 things on top of the arc smiting serpents scorpions etc) and others don't (parting water is a tech we cannot even hypothesize on).

Maybe its (or the items within which could not be touched)power source was depleted?

I can see why this artifact continues to hold fascination even today.

"It was after all where the very center of the presence of God for centuries resided on earth."

Just last year I was in a Bible Study and the book was talking about this. It seems odd to us (me at least!). But, you read it in the Bible that this is the "tabernacle" (dwelling place) for God. And at the end of Exodus after Moses gets everything (the Ark, incense, basin, tent, etc.) set up "Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle."

Of course that changed once Jesus came and died and rose and the Holy Spirit took over. I imagine the Ark (if it still is around) is nothing more than a beautiful yet glorified container of wonderful relics now.

Of course we all know that the islam-a-nazies will honor and respect this church the first time they gain control of it. Just like they honored and respected all those churches in Bosnia when they cleansed out the Christians. Isn't it funny how you don't hear about those areas on the MSM evening reports.
