Saving Iraqi baby a new mission for U.S. troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- When troops from the Georgia National Guard raided a Baghdad home in early December, they had no idea that their mission in Iraq would take a different turn.

As the young parents of an infant girl nervously watched the soldiers search their modest home, the baby's unflinching grandmother thrust the little girl at the Americans, showing them the purple pouch protruding from her back.

Little Noor, barely three months old, was born with spina bifida, a birth defect in which the spinal column fails to completely close. Iraqi doctors had told her parents she would live only 45 days.

Great story -- I hope this turns out well, but the bureaucracy for visas can be very rough and it may not speed itself up just because of life and death is at stake.

Hopefully the publicity will help -- my compliments to CNN.

A nice story

Agreed.

But a lot of Freepers would be mad if little Noor were a Mexican.

Running well here locally. I hope she does well. The troops turned around and went back in at some point to rescue her (and family I assume). Caught the end of the news on the way home.

When troops from the Georgia National Guard

I wonder. Was this standard during Vietnam or WWII? I mean the National Guard was activated during those wars. I don't ever recall hearing the heroics of the Pennsylvania National Guard on D-Day. Or the California National Guard at Da Nang.

May I speculate that identifying these heroic soldiers as Georgia National Guard instead of US Army is intended to sway my opinion of the war?

I'm not impugning service in the Georgia National Guard. But those men are doing a greater service as American soldiers right now.

So my heart just kind of went out to this baby and these parents who ... were living in poverty and had no means to help their baby. I thought we could do that for them," he added.

So Morgan and his fellow soldiers began working to get Noor the help she needs.

What our troops are doing when they are not terrorizing men women and children in their homes.

Thank you John Kerry.

You are a Weirdo!

Would you like me to find a thread where Freepers are upset that a Mexican child got medical treatment in the US? I'm just being honest.

What does that have to do with anything? That is two threads in a row that you have spouted off on people for no reason and without reason. Ease up.

Upset because a Mexican child with severe Spina Bifida received treatment? I can't imagine a heart that hard.

What the hell are you talking about? You've just insulted everyone on this site with your bigoted spew and you need to explain yourself.

I think for the most part you're referring to stories of the children of illegal immigrants who receive (often very expensive) medical care in the U.S. on the taxpayers' dime. That's a very different situation from what was described here. It's not so much about a lack of compassion for Mexican children as it is about anger at the abuse of the medical system here by people who routinely break our laws because the ends (better medical care for the children) justify the means.

Your comment, whether valid of not, had nothing to do with the story and was meant to inflame. Just like the bit on the non-landmines/smart mines in which you opined on the 80 mile proximity. No problem if you feel Mexicans are getting a bad rap, but to just make hit and run statements (especially on threads that have nothing to do with Mexico) is lame. My .02.

During Vn, we had the draft, therefore plenty of personnel to fill the slots......so very few Guard or reserve UNITS went there......but I can tell you that lots of Guard and Reserve members chose to go on active duty AS INDIVIDUALS, and were dispersed within active units serving in Vn. I was aware of 4 or 5 in one Company in my infantry Battalion, and there may have been more. Many subject to the draft used the Guard and Reserve to avoid Vn, but some of them chose to go.
