There was an urban rumor years ago that he had died.

How many times have I awoken to catch the 6:30AM train mumbling on my way into the shower...
Time to make the donuts... Time to make the donuts...
Not only was it a good ad campaign, I was a regular customer! (fewer donuts for me these days)

I may date myself but I still say "Time to make the donuts" most mornings when I roll out of bed. I totally identify with his character's mood in the mornings.

Great commercials. Sad news. Dunkin Donuts rocks. Wish there was one around my neck of the woods.
This guy deserves a police honor guard. 8>)

I'm trying to picture Rod Steiger as Fred the Baker. It's coming through Capone. "We'll give 'em some donuts they'll never forget."
Too late! Michael Vale already did. RIP "Fred" and thanks for the calories!

My favorite was when he put a dress on, covered his upper lip with his index finger and said to the grocery store stock boy in a falsetto voice: "Do YOU make 12 kinds of jelly donuts?".

The sad part is that many Americans don't know who Vale's role for the Dunkin' Donuts commercial are because Dunkin' Donuts never became really well-known west of the Mississippi except for a few short years in the 1990's.

Damn! I was hoping he'd play Saddam in an upcoming comedy/bio of the dictator.
