MISSION U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.
Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence which could start in California and end in Brownsville although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.
He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.
"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.
Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.
"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isnt going to solve anything."
Cornyn's head must be impacted in his nether region..
The man is logic impaired
No one uses the word perfect here except for you. A 2000 mile hi-tech fence plus the Border Patrol plus 5,000 fast response troops can keep that Mexican border 95% shut down and that's good enough for me. The open borders/business lobby hacks in DC are the problem. They don't want a fence and neither does Vicente Fox
Some have suggested a unification of Mexico and the US might be what they have in mind...
I've been trying to wake people up about the loss of our sovereignty in these trade negotiations ever since they started. On these boards, I routinely get accused of the usual tinfoil hat conspiricy theories. Sadly, only about a dozen or so posters, seem to have any concern about this at all. I say we hold our legislators accountable and demand in the primaries to know the candidates views on this subject. If that doesen't work, I hope there will be enough patriots left to fight the good fight.
That would work for me!
"Now how can this know-it-all know that much about the future unless he knows there is a conspiracy, of which he is party to, if properly handled(the success of the fence)can be thwarted)?

It's not a suggestion at all -- throw in Canada as well. The CFR is planning on this very thing -- to be completed in 5 years.

CFR's Plan to Integrate the U.S., Mexico and Canada [Bye Bye USA]
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1444055/posts
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has just let the cat out of the bag about what's really behind our trade agreements and security partnerships with the other North American countries. A 59-page CFR document spells out a five-year plan for the "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community" with a common "outer security perimeter."
"Community" means integrating the United States with the corruption, socialism, poverty and population of Mexico and Canada. "Common perimeter" means wide-open U.S. borders between the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
This CFR document, called "Building a North American Community," asserts that George W. Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin "committed their governments" to this goal when they met at Bush's ranch and at Waco, Texas on March 23, 2005. The three adopted the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" and assigned "working groups" to fill in the details.
Oh I'm sure some will sit there and hack away at whatever we put up. I'm willing to bet most will give up and try another way around though.
For years my solution for locking down the Mexican border was to supplement the Border Patrol with 30,000 US military. Many in mobile formations for fast response to intrusions. Bill O'Reilly spouted the same solution. But the Israelis have shown that border fences can work when they are constructed to be effective and aren't just showpieces. Today I think a 2,000 mile hi-tech fence with 5,000 mobile troops can seal the border. We just need the will to give the complaining Mexicans the middle finger and start building it.
Why would any red blooded American care what Mexico has to say about our fence?
I agree 100%
Cheap at TWICE the price -- considering that it costs twice the price or more every single year just to pay for the cost of having illegals in the country!
Another good column by Schlafly. It's unbelieveable to think there are politicians in our own government who might even consider such a thing but they're there and have to be stopped. I doubt there's very many Americans who'd be in favor of merging us with third world or socialist countries.
"The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".
That's why they're not letting us, the taxpayers, in on it. It's all under the radar.
Fitting.
"Have you actually read any of the bills floating on Capitol Hill concerning immigration or are you just shooting from the hip on the issue?"
I live in South Texas, and have spent a lot of time on the border!
BTW, where do you live?
Mexico's TV Azteca has now dubbed it the "wall of shame" (el muro de la verguenza) and has a nightly segment on the proposal, usually leading off its newscast.
Thank you, Sweetheart Badray. I know we (me and NU) both like the House Bill, I could not figure out why NU could not understand that... and it made me SO MAD...
I don't think I have ever blown up like that on a thread. Illegal immigration means so much to me.
I have stayed away from my puter for the last 2 days. I don't like to have to argue.
You took the time to read my comment, and understood it perfectly.
I really appreciate your chiming in with your common sense!
Thanks again.
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
