MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.
Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.
He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.
"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.
Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.
"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."
All of the 50 states pay federal taxes. The federal govt is sworn to uphold the Constitution. What is difficult to understand here?
U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4:
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
If he's for open borders and guest worker amnesty, then he's a RINO. Period.

Ha ha, that's a good one. You're right. There's absolutely no way a Mexican could get out of Mexico except by sneaking across the northern border. Them Mexicans sure is dumb.
First, get your own damn $5,000, like destitute would be illegals south of the border would have to, THEN try to inflitrate the USA.
Then, explain here and now how you are getting into the USA, once this fence runs along the border from Brownsville to San Diego.
Be specific. You are presently in Tecate or Nuevo Laredo, and you can't get over the Duncan Hunter fence.
So tell us your plan, in detail, for getting into the USA. 
So..should we just close the border and not allow any Mexicans to come to the US to work anymore? Just trying to understand your position on the matter.
Is 1 billion the 'official' estimated cost of the fence?
Fact is, the fence does work now. That is why they go around it.
Strange you claim a fence will not stop 100%, therefore it's impractical, BUT the Incentive Removal plan is 100% foolproof.
Okay, I have several options. I cross at a legal border crossing like thousands of other Mexicans do every day and continue on my way to wherever I want in the USA and don't return.
I make my way to the coast and hire a fishing boat to take me up to the coast. With no Coast Guard in sight, we head for land and I get off and wave to you.
I buy an airplane ticket to Canada and simply make my way to the unmarked and unguarded border and walk across.
Any of those options are cheaper than paying a coyote to smuggle me across.
Do you have any incentive to enter Mexico illegally?
I'd guess not, which is why it's not a problem for the Mexicans.
A fence isn't keeping you out. It seems like the lack of incentive is pretty darn close to 100% effective.
Tunnels are used for extremely high value missions such as smuggling heroin and cocaine, and we have been having great success at finding and closing them down. There is no way in the real world that 100s of thousands of illegal aliens are going to pay for new tunnels, and sneak under the border. That is a childish fantasy.
And even if we somehow prevent that, all any Mexican needs to do is catch a plane to Canada and enter from the north. For what they pay coyotes to smuggle them, I don't know why they are not doing that already. Maybe they are.
Funny thing about flying from Mexico to Canada. They need visas, it costs $$, and the numbers going in and out of Canada are easily monitored. Somehow, I think we'd notice a million Mexicans a year flying one-way into Canaday. Again, a childish idea.
And then there are thousands of miles of unguarded coastline where illegals could simply unload and walk freely onshore.
Unload from what? No way can boat smuggling take up the slack for the million plus who try to walk over the open border every year. Noticed any Haitians or Cubans deluging Florida lately? No, you have not. It's easy to stop them by sea in the numbers we're talking about, that is, the tens of thousands a month who simply walk over an open border.
You forgot the tunnel option...(wink)
Mexicans and anybody else will still be free to present themselves at the LEGAL PORTS OF ENTRY, as they can do anytime.
Mexicans and anybody else should not be able to ILLEGALLY sneak in across our borders.

Silly comment. The Border is a Federal responsibility. A fence protecting it will be paid for by American citizens and it will be a fraction of the cost we are currently paying for social services consumed by Illegals in a single year.
A few perhaps, but a million a year? Come on, stop kidding yourself.
Sure, a commando team might tunnel into a bank vault. By your logic, banks should therefore not waste money and effort on doors, alarms, or vault doors, since commandos might still tunnel in.
A fence is only something to go around if you can't get over it.

Interesting - so, why are we still using fences, walls, etc. to keep people out? Because they still work and they are a lot cheaper than hiring people to keep people out.
This is a total no-brain and I'm really taken back that a Republican cannot see the benefits of building an effective wall. Just Damn!
You certainly are not a very friendly chap...lol. FTR...I have no problem with a fence or stringent immigration laws..I favor them. So..why don't you calm down and have a rational discussion with your fellow freepers. (Maybe apologize for being a hard ass)
What is the projected cost of the fence...do you know?
