Cornyn Speaks On Immigration (opposes a fence)
The Monitor ^ | December 28,2005 | Victoria Hirschberg

Posted on 12/28/2005 5:36:33 AM PST by Reaganwuzthebest

MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.

Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.

He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."

How do you spell R.I.N.O?

How do you spell uninformed?

Cornyn may not agree with us on this issue but he's damn sure no RINO. He is bright, well spoken and a solid conservative.

"If we don't do something serious about stopping illegal immigration Senator Clinton is going to turn into President Clinton and democrats will be running Congress again for the next half century. Look at California's politics to see what the future of the whole country is going to be like."

Why? Are you going to vote for her?

Any politician, RINO or Rat, who opposes a border barrier but supports a guest-worker amnesty.....

We need the fence, but we also need to change our immigration policies. We need to make it easier to deport illegals. Also, cities need to stop passing ordinances that make it illegal for its police to cooperate with INS. Also, we need more Border Police.

Let's see...so you think the fence should be paid for by the federal government and that no states should help foot the bill?

Yep, the bottom line is MONEY. W and Cornyn want to make sure their buddies keep lining their pockets on taxpayers expense.

If this were 1918 and the country were going through what we are there'd be no discussion, the fence would go up and it wouldn't matter which party was in charge. Or better yet they'd round the illegals up and send them home. The fact we're debating such a thing that is a matter of national security exposes us to the world as being weak and indecisive.

At the risk of repeating myself for perhaps the third time on this thread, even an effective fence on the Mexican border will only force Mexicans to find another route into the United States. And they will.

How? Explicamelo, por favor.

I would simply note that if opponents of a fence didn't believe it would be effective, they wouldn't bother opposing it.

Bloody brilliant! Exactly!

Put up an effective fence on the Mexican border. I don't care. Some Americans who need access to the river will care, but that's probably offset by the number of ranchers without river access who will see a decline in the number of illegals on their land.

Just don't expect me to believe that it will stop illegal immigration. Give me $5,000 and your telephone number and I can call you from any nation on the planet you choose and I'll be there illegally.

It's not that hard.

Yeah, I'm sure that this Quisling pol has an "open door policy" at his house for squatters.

I would rather see them swim 10 miles of Pacific, or Gulf of Mexico than walk across.

Why? Are you going to vote for her?

If my vote meant anything in NY Hillary wouldn't be Senator. This state is and always has been solidly liberal. But not Texas, that's as conservative as it comes but it won't be for long if GOP Senators like Cornyn, McCain and others keep surrendering to the illegals. In fact on this issue I'd think those two were clones of Schumer and Clinton.

Immigration is a federal matter, as the federal courts keep repeating.

Hence, the Federal government should pay for it.

Given that the budget is 1,600 billion dollars, I assume we can afford to spend 1 billion on a fence.

The "won't work - can't be done - costs too much defeatists" just can't be honest about their goal: open borders, and the destruction of our national sovereignty.

I'd actually respect them more if they stopped lying. They are like little children with a face full of chocolate and a chin full of crumbs swearing to Mom that they have not taken any cookies. It's almost funny, except that so many of these transparent liars are our "leaders."

Senate Cornyn is NOT A RINO. He's very conservative. Just 'cause his views are different than yours doesn't make him a RINO.

He swore an oath to God to defend this, and he is working to do the opposite.

RINO.

and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"
