MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The cast: A Republican incumbent who alienated his base with a proposal to raise taxes. A chief justice who lost his job over his Ten Commandments stand. A former governor under indictment. A lieutenant governor who helped her ex-husband run for governor.
The show: Alabama's gubernatorial primaries of 2006.
In a state where George C. Wallace and James E. "Big Jim" Folsom made races for governor a must-watch event on the political stage, the current campaigns may be every bit as memorable.
On the Republican side, ousted Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, the Ten Commandments defender, is challenging Gov. Bob Riley, who is trying to rally his business backers after a failed $1.2 billion tax plan his first year in office.
"It will be a classic clash between the church factor of the Republican Party and the business factor of the Republican Party," said Jess Brown, a political scientist at Athens State University.
On the Democratic side, the featured players are indicted former Gov. Don Siegelman and Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley, who is trying to become Alabama's second female governor and the first elected in her own right.
"She has the potential to siphon off some women who traditionally vote Republican," said Charles Bullock, a specialist in Southern politics at the University of Georgia.

I will never vote for Lucy. I might just vote for Moore.
After Moore got kicked off the supreme court it would be sweet to see him win.
Though I'm not always totally comfortable with the few religous fanatics who call themselves Republicans, I am beginning to really dislike and resent the powerful business wing of the party, if for no other reason then they are intent on selling out the US for cheap labor. As a result, I find myself siding with the religous wing more often then not.
my wife said if i voted for riley she would divorce me so i'm voting for moore
lol, good move.
I had an uncle (long dead) who was an Alabama state legislator...he had some stories to tell, altho I admittedly don't remember much other than the setup was quite colorful...
"I had an uncle (long dead).." Who's he voting for nowadays?
I hope Moore wins. He has shown that he is willing to stand up for what is right.
Roy Moore is a very classy Man. My wife and I will Vote for him.
I will never vote for Lucy. I might just vote for Moore.
Sounds like they're voting for a bunch of horses.
Pretty much kicked himself off.
I had an uncle (long dead) who was an Alabama state legislator...he had some stories to tell,
You been talking to them ghosts again, Fred??
I think he caused the cement shortage.
The two real Republicans in the Lt. Governor race are Mo Brooks and Luther Strange.
The primary for Governor is a harder choice. Ideologically I'm alot closer to Roy Moore than Riley and his RINOish record on taxes. That said, Riley is probably a better candidate than Moore and Roy is also shamelessly pandering to get votes. I agree with his position on the 10 commandments but not his childish way of promoting it. Moore is a classic case of agreeing with the message but not the messenger. Call it a toss up.
Why does a Democrat former governor under indictment merit ZERO criticism from the Left, but the mere possibility of Karl Rove being indicted is the most important thing in the world?
