Poland wants troops in Iraq another year
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's government has asked the president to keep Polish troops in Iraq for another year, the premier said Tuesday.
If President Lech Kaczynski agrees to Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz's request, it would reverse the decision by the last government to bring troops home within the next few weeks.
"The government has asked the president to extend our mission in Iraq," Marcinkiewicz told reporters in Warsaw following the government's weekly meeting.
Marcinkiewicz called it "a very difficult decision." The deployment is unpopular, and 17 Polish soldiers have died.
Under Polish law, the president approves overseas military deployments as the armed forces' commander in chief. Kaczynski, who took office last week, has until the end of the month to decide.
Heroes--All of 'em...so Stop writing like they was victims 'cuz they isn't, Mr. Hournalist editor or whatever your name is.
The Poles are proving to be loyal allies.
Thank you, Poland!
They are good allies. They haven't forgotten WWII like the French have.
The Poles are loyal and valiant allies however most of their fatalities have been from vehicle accidents. They operate under different rules of engagement. When they get in trouble they call in an AC-130, the US Marines or US armor. Then there's the El Savs. Nobody messes with the El Savs. They handle route security and ensure there's Peace-in-the-Valley in the MND CS, which there is.
Way to go, Poland! Thanks for your help and sacrifice!
Anyone wishing to send a big, hearty American THANK YOU! to an English-speaking representative of the Government of Poland may do so at the Polish Embassy in the United States:

29 July 2004 - Marcina Rutkowski (military) - killed by explosion of a mine trap.
This was a vehicle rollover of a Honker at the entrance to route Tampa. There was a carbomb on the Babylon road leading to route Tampa. It was on the outskirts of a small Shiite town. It left a small crater. The driver panicked and drove more than 5 Kms down the elevated road towards route Tampa, past an Iraqi police station. There are 2 sharp curves along the road before entering route Tampa (highway). There are deep ditches on the side of the road. The driver made the first left-hand turn but not the next right hand turn and rolled down to the left into a flat, swamp like area. The depression from the vehicle is still there.
My point is half the military fatalities were vehicle accidents. In the American military vehicle deaths are supposed to be prevented. I think the Honker is top-heavy and rolls over easily as the losses show. The 2 soliders who died 3 weeks later were in a similar situation. They were fired at in Al Hillah, returning to Bablylon. They survived the attack but died in a vehicle accident down the road.
The Polish soldiers were very courteous and professional and I enjoyed working with them. I haven't been down to Diwaniyah in almost a year but maybe I will go before leaving Iraq. If so maybe you can call someone there and tell them to kick my ass for you. ; )
Thanks for the address.
"Ok, not most but half were from vehicle accidents"
True but couldn't be the same said about US losses ?
"I think the Honker is top-heavy and rolls over easily as the losses show."
Honker was designed as a vehicle for farmers. In the army they shouldn't be anything more than mini buses/half trucks.
You're welcome! I hope that they will be inundated with words of praise and thanks from grateful Americans.
Me too, but I doubt it. I am a pessimistic person you see. I wrote though, and I'm sure a few others will. Happy New Years.
