Hillary Clinton's Got the Ball, but Others Line Up for a Shot
LA Times ^ | December 26, 2005 | Ronald Brownstein:

Posted on 12/26/2005 4:10:18 AM PST by ncountylee

Now that the issue of what's under the tree has been settled, the biggest question facing many Democrats for the next year reduces to three words: Will Hillary run?

The race for the next Democratic presidential nomination can't really take shape until Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York signals her intentions, and that probably won't come until 2007. But the expectation that she'll run is influencing the early maneuvering, as her potential rivals start to define how they might position themselves against her.

If Clinton jumps in she will be the front-runner, with big leads in the early polls, a bulging campaign treasury, enduring goodwill toward her husband among rank-and-file Democrats (an especially valuable asset in the African American community), long-standing ties with elected officials and interest groups, and extensive national experience. Beyond all that, candidate Clinton would probably argue that she was the only choice who could unify the famously fractious Democrats.

In all, Clinton's advantages in a nominating race look at least as strong as those George W. Bush enjoyed when he captured the GOP nod in 2000. But a Clinton bid would face two distinct, even contradictory, sources of resistance.

One would come from some centrist Democrats who think she's too liberal — or at least perceived as too liberal by too many voters — to win a general election. The other would come from some grass-roots liberals who think that in her effort to assuage those concerns, she has conceded too much ground to conservatives, especially in her support for the Iraq war.

Agreed. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when your ONLY candidate is a BEAST like Hitlery.

Maybe the long delay is due to the inability to come up with a resume that includes actual self-accomplishments. (sarc)

Ironic that the LAT fails to list "Canine deference by the MSM." But I guess that's implied.

Right.

All that probing you are feeling is just your proctologist exercising his finger in your sphincter muscle.

More realistically-"Will Hillary keep on running?" And that is a rhetorical question only.

"But?"

All Democratic pols profit electorally by being attacked ineffectually from the left. 2008 is two years away; by then the American casualty rate in Iraq will please God be much lower than now. In any case "objective" journalism will forget its obsession with the fall of every sparrow in Iraq. If Clinton needs it.

And as to being attacked from the right within the Democratic Party - well, Joe Lieberman is only one guy. The correct strategy against Clinton is, IMHO, an attack on civil liberties grounds. Clinton attained national prominence by getting x42 elected - and FBI Filegate and Travelgate could not have happened without that. Nor could they have happened without Clinton's approval even so, if Clinton had any of the authority in the WH with which she is credited.

She may have two of those but those two legs are definitely not hers. Replace them with telephone poles and you'll have a more accurate picture.

Except that Hillary is a liar, who only has her own self interest at heart, and has no set of core values.

A stark contrast to George W. Bush.

Not that I'd wish this on anyone, but what would happen if Hillary got cancer or some other life-threatening illness? She'd probably try to keep it quiet, but if it became public, her candidacy would be dead. Interestingly, McCain had skin cancer several years ago, underwent treatment, and now has his eye on the White House. I don't think the voters would feel the same way about Hill.

Hilliary is a fiment of the Liberal Lefts imigination. She has no real credentials other than what the MSM can give her. She has for the most part been under fire after coming out of Arkansas but never had to answer a question she did not want to or make a decision on her own. She indeed is a FIGMENT!
