22 Congressmen Hate Christmas
This year's "War for Christmas" keeping "Christ" in the holiday has apparently been won. And, like many "wars," there has even been a Congressional resolution in support of keeping Christmas alive and well.
On December 15 the House of Representatives passed a resolution "protecting the symbols and traditions of Christmas" by an overwhelming 401-22 vote.
Representative JoAnn Davis (R-VA), the resolution's sponsor, said the resolution was necessary to counter "political correctness run amok."
"No one," she said, "should feel like they have done something wrong by wishing someone a Merry Christmas."
Twenty-two Democrats played Scrooge and disagreed.
Representative Robert Scott (D-VA) said Republicans were more concerned with the symbolism rather than the substance of Christmas referring to Republican passage of a bill to slow the rate of growth in federal entitlement programs. Davis lodged a preemptive response to critics who might question the constitutionality of her resolution.
"Celebrating Christmas is not a violation of separation of church and state," she said. "The Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialogue."
The text of the resolution read as follows:
Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and
Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore be it resolved, that the House of Representatives
(1) Recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;
(2) Strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and
(3) Expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions, for those who celebrate Christmas.
How many of these are Progressives? All I presume.
I see Rep Owens voted present -- I assume that's Major Owens from Brooklyn -- is still swimming the route.http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:ePoeg7ANdNAJ:www.iaff.org/across/news/LegCon02/031802owen.jpg
Oh don't be ridiculous you whiner. If hearing "Happy Holidays" in your local Target is the worst injury you've ever suffered, you're pretty damn lucky. Congress passes meaningless bulls*** resolutions like this whenever they want to waste taxpayers' time and money instead of worrying about important things.
Not only is this posturing, but its the silliest posturing I've ever heard of.
None from my district.:-)
But seriously folks....
There might be several reasons one might cast a "No" vote here, and none of them would mean that the person hated Christmas. Perhaps they think the resolution is frivolous. Perhaps they think Congress has better things to do with its time. Perhaps they see the resolution as pure political pandering. Perhaps they think this type of resolution is dangerously close to "endorsing" a particular religion and therefore a bad idea.
A vicious anti-Christian bigot and anti-American enemy of the nation.
Amen to that!
How moonbat are the 22 when they could not even get the support of Cynthia McKinney, Dennis (the antiYoda) Kucinich, Rosa DeLauro, Louise Slaughter, Nancy Pelosi (Demonrat-San Francisco)??????????????? In all of New York City, they could only get Ackerman?????? Not a single Taxachusetts Congresscritter????? Not even the singlest (Bawney Fwank)????????
Perhaps, and far more likely than any of those, is that they are God-hating and Christmas-hating liberals. How many pro-lifers among the 22? How many supporters of actual marriage vs. lavender make-believe?
Don't be ridiculous. Businesses aren't mandating anything. Are they preventing you from celebrating Christmas? All of you guys are being such whiners.
Like I said this would never have come up in congress if the lefty loonies had not tried to press the issue.
This isn't a left-right issue, this is a stupid issue. You really think a bunch of Christianity-hating leftists are running Walmart? No, this is simply business. Again, nobody's trying to force you to change your religious beliefs or practices, so kindly focus on real issues.
Maybe they all represent athiest, spoil-sport districts.
And a happy Hanukkah to you.
Ain't life under this adminsitration's fist great???
Nadler, Weiner, Lantos and several other Jewish members of congress supported this resolution. Wexler and Wasserman-Schultz opposed it because they have JINO majority districts in South Florida where even Orthodox Jews have trouble with the locals.
May your afterlife be standing in-line at a Wal-Mart in Guangzhou, decorated with nude photos of Helen Thomas.
..God bless us everyone..
