Shopper Pays for Marine's Engagement Ring
AP ^ | Dec 23, 2005

Posted on 12/23/2005 7:17:21 PM PST by presidio9

A Marine who's planning to marry a Texan got an early Christmas present: A fellow shopper picked up the tab for a $3,000 diamond engagement ring after the two struck up a conversation in a jewelry store.

The 54-year-old Dallas woman who paid for the 1-carat, princess cut diamond ring wants to remain anonymous, Helzberg Diamonds spokeswoman Stacey McBride told The Associated Press on Friday.

The woman's father was in the military, her brother was a Marine who died in Vietnam and her nephew just got back from Iraq, McBride said.

Marine James Lynaugh, 28, of Patuxent River, Md., was shopping Thursday at the Helzberg Diamonds store at a mall in Tyler.

Lynaugh and the anonymous shopper discussed their mutual military connections. Lynaugh opened a store credit account to buy the ring, then left with it.

After the other shopper paid for her items, she inquired whether Lynaugh's credit charge could be reversed. She didn't even ask about the cost of the ring, McBride said.

"So we were able to reverse that charge, and she paid in full with a check," McBride said.

A representative of the North Kansas City., Mo, company later contacted Lynaugh with the good news.

"He did say that he broke the news to his fiancee" that someone else paid for the ring, McBride said.

Lynaugh's fiancee is from Athens, about 40 miles southwest of Tyler in East Texas. The Marine also has family in Huntsville.

He did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press on Friday afternoon.

Thanks for commenting....

I lived in Chevy Chase for a period after leaving the Marine Corps -- and visited Marines wounded in Vietnam that had been taken to BNH to be nearer their families...

It was a fine hospital then, one of the best -- and I hope it has remained so.

It still is, both of my grandsons were born there and I have nothing but good things to say about both Walter Reed and BNH

Merry Christmas!

May God richly bless that fine woman. She gave a real head start to that young couple. What a beautiful way to express her support and gratitude.

If I had $3000 to blow, I would do that too! Really, I mean it. They should make that kind of thing tax deductible!!

My Cousin (who was like a brother and lived with our family his whole life) spent 8 months in a Guam Hospital and 4 more months at BNH after stepping on a land mine on Halloween day 1968 in Kaison, VN. I was in grade school then, and I saw first hand how he was treated and till this day my blood boils when I see groups like "Code Pink" doing what the Communist backed Liberals were doing back in the late 60's. When I was 17 years old I tried to enlist in the Marines but was denied because of being partially deaf, so since then I have been doing my part by supporting all of our troops anyway that I can

Semper Fi my friend, God Bless You!

Now, you know how I feel.

That is a great story!

If you can, please contact your local VA hospitals to help out the Vets, who have become barely remembered by the rest of the country. They need simple items to keep comfortable, which can be as simple as Socks.

My Masonic Lodge donates money several times a Year to our local VA hospital and several the members help out. I plan to help out for the new wave of Vets from the War on Terror for technology needs.

If you can't donate Noney, why not a Few Hours a month? Listen to this Old Timers and learn an almost forgotten history. I have met a Vet who was involved in capturing the Death Camps that the Islamic morons have claimed don't exist.

"They should make that kind of thing tax deductible!!"

While I share your wish to do something like this myself Keep the F'n Gov't out of it. Once they get involved corruption and inefficiency are certain to follow close behind. This was from the heart and not some phony Dem income transfer scheme and that makes it wonderful.

It was a bit of a satirical remark, not intended to be taken seriously, sorry about that.

I feel pretty good about myself when I buy military personnel beers when I see them out at bars. Now I feel inadequate as hell.

My hubby spent 16-months in Iraq. After he came back, strangers bought both of us drinks upon hearing that he served in the military (he didn't easily volunteer this info either). It is ALWAYS appreciated. Thank you for buying us drinks.
