Song: Adeste Fideles ( *O Come All Ye Faithful*)

Background Info: The Englishman, John Francis Wade, wrote both the words and the music, Adeste Fideles. The Musical score was first published in 1782 in Samuel Webbe's An Essay on the Church Plain Chant in 1782. John Francis Wade first included it in his own 1751 publication of Cantus Diversi. The lyrics were first published in 1760.

Background Info: The Ave Maria was composed in about 1825 by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) when he was twenty-eight years old and filled with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was written for voice and piano and first Published in 1826 as Op 52 no 6. The words most commonly used with Schubert's music are not the words that the composer originally set to music. Franz Schubert actually wrote the music for an excerpt from the poem "The Lady of the Lake" by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), which was translated into German by Adam Storck. Schubert called his piece Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen's third song). In this particular excerpt from the poem the heroine, Ellen Douglas, is in hiding and prays to the Virgin Mary. Background Info:

Protestant reformer Martin Luther is considered by some to be the composer of this carol, although without question the modern version comes from nineteenth-century American composer William James Kirkpatrick. The first two verses were by an anonymous author as part of the Little Children’s Book for Schools and Families by J. C. File, and the third verse is by John Thomas McFarland (1851-1913). Credit belongs here.

The first two verses of “Away in a Manger” were originally published in 1885 in a Lutheran schoolbook. James Murray published it in 1887 under the title of “Luther’s Cradle Hymn” leaving some people to think that Luther had written it. No one is certain who wrote the music, but it, too, is believed to be American.

~ Unbeknownst to many, the word "xmas" was not invented by carnal merchants trying to commercialize Christmas. The word is actually an old English one. The "x" in Christmas is the Greek letter chi, which is the first letter in the Greek word for "Christ." Thus, "xmas" is simply a shortened version of "Christmas." Credit belongs here.

Background Info: The melody is Welsh and belongs to a winter carol, Nos Galan; the "fa-la-la" refrains were probably originally played on the harp. In the eighteenth century Mozart used the tune to Deck the Halls for a violin and piano duet. J.P. McCaskey is sometimes credited with the lyrics of Deck the Halls but he only edited the Franklin Square Song Collection in which the lyrics were first published. The English words generally sung today are American in origin and date from the 19th century. Some versions say "Deck the Hall" instead of "Deck the Halls". Credit belongs here.

The following memories are in various formats. The ones that end in .html take you to a built-in player. If you have an audio recorder program, you can record them.
I downloaded and use a free audio recorder program (records any audio on the internet or your computer to 128kbps mp3:
click on the below link, then click on the link that says free, and then click on download

my tips, so far, from using this free audio recorder program:

Go to programs in your C drive and open the file called "MagicSofts", within that file there's a file called "SC" which is where the completed mp3 lands. Right-click on the SC file and select make a shortcut so that you can have it on your desktop. Having it on your desktop makes it much easier to go in and find the completed mp3 if you want to rename it or move it to another folder.

The button with the circle on it is the one to click to begin recording and be sure to click on the button with the square on it to stop recording when the audio is done or you'll have some blank space at the end of the mp3. The arrow between the question mark and x is the one to click on to minimize the program so that it will fall into your tool bar; to open it back up, just click on the symbol in your tool bar. If the audio you want to record takes some time to load (like some real audio media), it's best to let it load fully in your player....then hit the stop button and hit the play button right after you click the record button. When recording from internet sites that have built-in players, click on the player's stop button so that you can start the recorder first, then click on play. Since the recorder doesn't take up much screen space, you can usually adjust your screen so that you can click on the record button and quickly click on the website's play button afterwards.

If you click on the button in the lower right-hand corner of the program, a "save as" box will pop up and you can type the name of the song and artist in the "object name" space (be sure the name you type ends with .mp3), or you can just rename the mp3 after the recording completes. If you don't type in a name for the mp3 before recording, the completed mp3 will have show up as a number which you can choose to rename afterwards.

Background:
On June 22, 1935, one-time Ford motor plant employee Joe Louis laid out Italy's Primo Carnera in the sixth round before a crowd of 60,000 in New York's Yankee Stadium. "Whether it was the South Side of Chicago, St. Antoine Street of Detroit, or the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Negro communities throughout the nation went crazy with joy,"reported the New York Amsterdam Star-News. A folk hero had been born.

One of the great women of the blues, Memphis Minnie reflected that joy in a recording session two months after the Louis-Carnera bout. (She also waxed a "Joe Louis Strut.")
