US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

"Another leak????"

Amazing to me too. The Bush administration had up until recently been spectacular at keeping secrets. Lately everything seems to be slipping out.

...will someone please help me understand the logic of continuing the free pass on these leaks?

I wish I could. This leaking has gone past the dangerous level.

I hope the DOJ get serious about stopping this.

Do you really think these leaks are coming from the administration?

Whatever happened to that inviolable wall of separation between church (mosque) and state?

"What dumbbutt is leaking this stuff. Stop already!

How dare you refer to this individual as a leaker? He/She is a WHISTLEBLOWER!!! The "conscience" of the Bush Administration. I expect the MSM to treat this person with the same respect given to other great whistleblowers, you know, like Linda Tripp!

This is pretty sad and amazing at the same time. We are at war with a group that would like to erase a city of two from our map. One of the most plausible (if not the MOST plausible) suspects of the leak is a United States Senator. The fact we can even consider the possibility this guy is undermining our efforts against this group of thugs is just a shame.

Me too, and you don't have to guess which finger I'm pointing with.

I went to CNN and this story is the lead today. They have a video of "Muslim reaction" and as expected "Muslims" are outraged at the warrantless intrusion, etc.

I think that someone is trying to do a little Islamic rabble rousing- perhaps as a leadup to riots as in France and Australia?

Why would I think so- well, there were two people interviewed, Mahdi Bray and Deedra Abboud. Although CNN just put up their names, I plunked them into my trusty search engine and learned that Mahdi Brey just coincidentally is the executive director of the Muslim American Society, and Deedra Abboud is, guess what, executive director of CAIR!

What a happenstance that CNN should randomly find these two and that they are outraged!

The same story in the NY Slimes includes this even more inflammatory wording about CAIR's BOGUS, opportunistic reaction:

The group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in a statement: "This disturbing revelation, coupled with recent reports of domestic surveillance without warrant, could lead to the perception that we are no longer a nation ruled by law, but instead one in which fear trumps constitutional rights.

All Americans should be concerned about the apparent trend toward a two-tiered system of justice, with full rights for most citizens, and another diminished set of rights for Muslims."

This is such an outrage because the Koran specifies that Muslims are better than everyone else and should only tolerate people of the book if they pay taxes to Muslim leaders.
