US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Publishing classified material is a violation of federal law. Someone should be prosecuted for this leak, and if the reporter or editor won't reveal the source, then they should be charged.

Freedom of the press comes with responsibility. It is not unlimited and it is not a cover for sedition and treason.

If the Democrats are leaking this, they are really stupid. Joe Sixpack doesn't care much whether NEST's monitoring of radiation levels outside homes is constitutional. All they care is that the President is keeping America safe from dirty bombs by using NEST to monitor suspected terrorists.

Just watch the President's approval rating rise. Again.

If this is true, then U.S. News and World Report eds needs to be placed in the stocks with the Slimes Editors.

It's hard to get a Commission on UnAmerican Activities going in an UnAmerican Congress.

"Absolute treason to release this top secret information. The criminals responsible should all be executed."

The insane controllers of the MSM and the rat party have worn out their welcome. It is time to send them to their mansions with shock collars. If they wander off or try call someone or email some one, they get 100,000 watts of DC through the collars an into their necks.

don't ask.

It is probably either an anonymous source or someone on whatever "Deep" background is, which means they would have to go after the press.

It SHOULD happen, but it won't. And it isn't necessarily the DOJ's fault either.

It's the security managers within whichever organization that leaked this information and the investigative branch in that organization, NOT the DOJ.

I agree. However, the DoJ should more aggressively investigate and prosecute leakers for treason, IMO.

The MSM waited until the moment Rush went off-air and on vacation to divulge this leak.
They're going to report stuff like this all next week, aren't they?

it won't happen simply because the DOJ doesn't and won't have the security clearances necessary to sift through the nonsense without the security manager's consent, which isn't easily given.

The DoJ isn't the problem. It's the damned moles in these organizations that, of course, ALWAYS sign off on their quarterly OPSEC reviews like good little boys and girls.....

I think the odds are better than 50/50 that a US city gets nuked in my lifetime.

The dems will complain about this until someone they care about gets nuked. Then they'll say it's President Bush's fault, and the MSM will have selective amnesia. as usual, and agree with them.
