Dec. 21, 2005 - Back in the 1980s, when I was living in Johannesburg and reporting on apartheid South Africa, a white neighbor proffered a tasteless confession. She was "quite relieved," she told me, that new media restrictions prohibited our reporting on government repression. No matter that Pretoria was detaining tens of thousands of people without real evidence of wrongdoing. No matter that many of them, including children, were being torturedsometimes to death. No matter that government hit squads were killing political opponents. No matter that police were shooting into crowds of black civilians protesting against their disenfranchisement. "It's so nice," confided my neighbor, "not to open the papers and read all that bad news."
I thought about that neighbor this week, as reports dribbled out about President George W. Bush's sanctioning of warrantless eavesdropping on American conversations.

BTW, does anyone know exactly how many individuals were actually listened in on? I've heard as few as 28. Is this accurate?
Where's the outrage? That's easy. It's in the Stalinist liberal idiot press.
Not exactly, but I'd heard 30. 30 of our most upstanding citizens, I'm sure.
That outrage you hear is the echo from Bin Laden's cave
The number is not relevant. The fact that it was leaked, when the operation required the upmost of security is the travesty here. The President acted within his authority and is being crucified by the liberal media for it.
I'm sure arlene must be happy that her homeland and neighboring countries are relieved of "white" oppression and are happily devolving into slaughter and oblivion under the "black" variety.
The hypocrite Dim's would be all over Bush if he DIDN'T monitor these conversations.
As Rush says, "It's STILL not safe to vote Democrat".
Arlene ranks right up there with Michael Isikoff. What a bleeding idiot.
Of course the leak and subsequent reporting on it is primary. I agree but simply want to know that part of it - The actual number of people involved - Since, to hear the MSM wailing, one would think it was millions.
Arlene could write about next door Zimbabwe and the great dictator Mugabe, but that wouldn't fit into the agenda.
I have read some real left wing liberal pieces in Newsweek before, but this one takes the grand prize.
I would suggest everyone write to complain to Newsweek... this is disgusting.
I warned you! :-) It really got my dander up as well. What a bleeding heart, completely divorced from reality hit piece, eh.
I have hear the number 500 reported by numerous sources including Fox News.
Tell anyone you know who has it to cancel the script. IF you see a subscription form call and say I thought about subscribing but your magazine is run by Al Jezeera
I'm beginning to think that Newsweak deserves a special award as Enemy of the Year.
I guess Getz is suggesting that soon we will be arresting children and torturing them and also firing into crowds of "disenfranchised" --one of the libs favorite words-- black people. This is truly a liberal classic.
And Fur Shur, he failed to mention they were of different major tribes.
Ultimately those people are going to kill each other off anyway.
Once again... Newsweek... reminds me I need to buy more Scotts toilette paper.
Reminds me of Leo Getz, from the Lether Weapon movies.
