USA Today allows only the headline and the link, but paraphrasing, the article describes how movies like Syriana, Munich, and the Showtime series "Sleeper Cell" show terrorists in a sympathetic light. Farther down in the article, George Clooney says it's because of the public's "displeasure" with the Iraq war. I would suggest that it goes a few steps further. These movies are intended to turn the public against the war against terrorism, and they are trying to drum up sympathy for the terrorists.
Do click on the link and read this.
Or a film that shows Stalin as a humanitarian because he did not kill as many people as he COULD have killed. He may have had 40 million deaths in him, but he only killed 30 million people. From this perspective, Stalin could be said to have saved 10 million lives!!
Where else does evil manifest itself but in humans?
Didn't actually show the bombing...that would show carnage and might tip the sympathy toward the other side.
And if anyone can tell me what the heck else was going on in the convoluted plot, I will be grateful.
Meanwhile in other Hollywood news, the movie industry is freaking out over poor box office receipts.
If Hollywood's offerings only include sympathetic views of terrorists, gay sheepherders, and remakes of remakes then they should get used to an empty cash box at the box office.
In all honesty, that would actually be a great idea for a satire. Show one or both of them in such a sympathetic light that it would disgust people. And, make as many subtle comparisons as you can to today. I think its a great idea.
I haven't seen it. If Clooney's in it, I don't go to the movie. I have Sleeper Cell saved to watch later, but after reading this, I might just erase it and free up the disk space.
Memo to Hollywood Mogul's: This is not 1969. We get the real news!
"Thank you, my friend, for seeing the error of your ways. Now we can proceed as men of good will. We will be brothers and there will be peace between us. You are ready to convert to Islam, right? No? Okay, then I have to kill you." [BANG!] (or maybe a sawing and gurgling sound)

So, Clooney is trying to get another six people to see Syrianna.
If some producer wanted to make a fortune, ala Mel Gibson with THE PASSION, he / she should make a pro-American military, anti-Islamawhacko movie. Sure the usual suspects would howl that it was jingoistic and too black-and-white in how it portrayed good and evil but it would clean up at the box office.
C'mon! Clooney's emotional range stretches from A to B!
Who cares what those meat puppets in Hollywood think?
What proof do we have that they actually DO think?
"Sleeper Cell" humanized the terrorists (it could not have avoided doing that) but it did not sympathize with them. I thought it was a great series. I would like to see more like it.
I'm waiting for Gibson to make an anti-Muslim movie. (But, with his upbringing, I doubt he ever will)
Terrorists ARE people....who need killing!
How 'bout a film showing all the "ex-people" their bombing campaigns have created?
I completely agree with you. I thought it was an excellent series and I would hope that somehow they are able to do a second season--although I have no idea how that storyline would go. I think Sleeper Cell also showed that these terrorists aren't just willing to committ acts of terrorism, but also participate in 'honor killings,' 'stonings,' all the while having the morality of a street whore.
I find it amazing that, 4 years after 9/11, Sleeper Cell is the first half-way realistic TV drama or movie about Islamic terrorism in the United States. Can you think of any others?
