what a convoluted series of events. most interesting was the part of the article that states the guy who commanded the murder of the israelis was named afif. his mother is jewish and his father christian, which makes him jewish. good job for golda in surmising the situation correctly, kill all those who kill us and nevermind everything else. does golda have any children, id vote for them to be president of the usa with that attitude.

I didn't bother finishing. Not out of a desire of ignorance, but for a very simple reason. I saw the word "hero" and then a bunch of caveat's.(spelling)

Heroism, requires no warning, it requires no apology, heroism is the resolute effort of an individual, or of Individuals for a cause greater than themselves. It requires no heroism to muddy the pure waters of moral honesty. A Moral person doesn't need to apologize. They can UNDERSTAND, but never apologize for their moral stance, and for their heroic acts.

I crossed up comments in this, and I screwed up my grammar, but I think my point is made. . . . I hope. Been chastised before for about the same things.

Spielberg is the wrong person to make this movie. His "making them all human" sentiment is telling. No, it's not constructive to make the murderers and terrorists Darth Vaders, but it's amoral to make them people just doing a job.

The amorality of moral equivalence will be our undoing. Spielberg simply isn't equipped to handle this kind of material. I know many here will disagree, but Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan (and Amistad) are embarassingly cartoony, for all their amazingly good filmmaking.

I can't stomach the whole review. . . however "focusing on revenge" isn't new and innovative. In the. . . I think late 80's maybe early 90's there was a movie (maybe one of those few, at the time, made for HBO movies) called "sword of Gideon" A POWERFUL movie. It showed the collateral damage, it showed the indifference of those hungry for revenge, and it reduced the effort for vengeance into an irrational act, which I think is true. However, it also shows that you aren't exactly wrong. There is, and was, in "the sword of Gideon" a very anti-israeli death squad overtone, and that is EXACTLY how it was depicted, but I did not leave that stand up to take a leak from that movie going "F!'n Israel HOW DARE THEY!" In fact, "The Sword of Gideon" did a very good job of depicting the horrible acts of each scumbag that was being assassinated as he was targeted.

The point I took from "The Sword of Gideon" was relatively honest. The overtones were sympathetic to collateral damage, but not to the specific targets. The terrorists were terrorists, and the zealous hit squad was a zealous hit squad, the only thing in the movie that might be "sympathetic" was the death of the innocents. The movie did a very good job of that. . .the only disappointment, in terms of politics at that time, was the last significant statement by the protagonist "If we keep taking an eye for an eye, soon the whole world will be blind!" and then I think it ends with the protagonist killing another badguy openly, and then being slaughtered himself.

It's been some time, but if you wanna talk about plot complexity, rather than thematic complexity, then I think I would and will remember "The Sword of Gideon" as a better polemic, than Munich.

What moral equivalence was there in Schindler's List and Private Ryan? I thought it was pretty clear the Nazis were the bad guys. There was no attempt to show both sides in those films.

Munich might have been a "Secret Masterpiece" if he had allowed himself to tell the complex truth about the Jews and the Palestinians. Instead he turned it into another Indiana Jones.

The amorality of moral equivalence will be our undoing.

When one declares that there is no moral difference between the aggressor and the victim, one has really sided with the aggressor. Some people feel morally superior because they have placed themselves "above the fray" by being indifferent to the victim. People with this mindset are in my opinion more like reptiles than humans.

GREAT article. I feel more educated now that I read it and I won't bother with Spielberg movies any longer now that success has gone to his head and the Lollywood or Hellywood Liberal magnet has sucked him into its realm.

The title chosen for this article was a bit misleading. I thought maybe Spielberg was taking flak from Jews for making this dumb movie. If he is there is no mention of it here.
