4 GOP Senators Hold Firm Against Patriot Act Renewal
Washington Post ^ | Charles Babington | Charles Babington

Posted on 12/20/2005 6:58:23 PM PST by ncountylee

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) could barely conceal his anger.

"The Patriot Act expires on December 31, but the terrorist threat does not," he told reporters at the Capitol yesterday. "Those on the Senate floor who are filibustering the Patriot Act are killing the Patriot Act."

There was just one problem. Well, four problems, actually. Four of the 46 senators using the delaying tactic to thwart the USA Patriot Act renewal are members of Frist's party. It is a pesky, irritating fact for Republicans who are eager to portray the impasse as Democratic obstructionism, and a ready-made rejoinder for Democrats expecting campaign attacks on the issue in 2006 and 2008.

The four Republican rebels -- Larry E. Craig (Idaho), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), John E. Sununu (N.H.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) -- have joined all but two Senate Democrats in arguing that more civil liberties safeguards need to be added to the proposed renewal of the Patriot Act.

"I am not a society. I am me"

Indeed you are yourself. And as an individual in an American society, unlike some here would have you believe, you are entitled to your opinion. (Not totally necessarily on this forum mind you). But as an American citizen you are entitled to your opinion and your voicing of those opinions.

For today's thieves of property and freedom, imminent domain and the patriot act are only the baby steps.

I've read the Patriot Act several times over.

There is nothing in it about Imminent Domain, or taking anyone's property away, willy nilly.

You don't make the laws. Neither do I. This isn't a democracy and the mob doesn't rule! We are a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC!

And you aren't an island! If someone touches you, you don't have the "right" to kill that person.

You may live somewhere where the 9/11 attacks mean nothing at all to you. You may not care about anyone in this nation but yourself and perhaps your family; if you have one.

When the chips are down, you are one of those, who run away screaming about "rights" that you have NOT lost. Nobody would want you in the trenches with them. You'd much rather be emotional and illogical, and scream about things which you neither understand, not really care about. You don't give a damn about our nation; it's just all about you, you, YOU!

I'm all for different opinions. I'm even open to having my opinions changed when presented with intelligent statements supported with good argument and facts. Foolish comments along with calling anyone that questions them dummy and jerkweed doesn't cut it. It only exposes the poster for what they are.

Is there any chance that you guys could drop the personal attacks and actually address the issues?

If a person asserts that the Patriot Act says one thing and you disagree, why not just write "I think you are misreading it - here is my take..." rather than "you are a fool and you can't even read right"

The decisions themselves become what is called case law. Such as with Roe v. Wade. No legislation was required for Roe v. Wade to become law, it is case law.

Short version:

The fact of the courts decision is what makes it law.

Though I would assume the case was brought forward by the plaintiff based on the FISA of 1978. Based on the merits of the law and the arguments the courts ruled as they did. The Dems can scream Impeach all they want, but like it or not what the NSA did was legal and they've been doing it for 20+ years as the 1984 case shows.

What FreeReign wants is to free reign over us all.

U-bet.

A reign of freedom. Let freedom reign.

It's a period when freedom rules. Reign vs. rein: know the difference.

BTW, have you stopped all activities yet? They're comin' for you.

paul51 to tnp: "Ok. I'm back fool." (here paul51 calls tnp a fool.)

Later paul51 to tnp: " Foolish comments along with calling anyone that questions them dummy and jerkweed doesn't cut it."

Here the hypocrit makes a feeble attempt to explain his contortions. Btw, I've never called anyone a "jerkweed." Nonetheless, "jerkweed" is definetly too wimpy like girlie man for me to call someone. So
I wouldn't be caught dead calling someone whatever a "jerkweed" is.

LOL. I'm trying to be serious and constructive but you are making it difficult. (Incidentally, was the infraction setting off a firecracker on the street corner in Atlanta?)

Thank You!

The personal attacks make us all look like DUmmies. I am all for a healthy debate but belittling your opponent smacks of Al Gore and John Kerry campaign tactics. FReepers are much better people that that, no matter what side of this debate they are on.

Did you have an opinion on it?

I think the Patriot Act is mostly positive, but I do have some civil liberty concerns. I have also have concerns about how it could be used against political enemies if a socialist becomes president.

I have not read the entire act but I was hoping that this thread would help me understand if there really were any civil liberty issues to be concerned about.

The terrorist attacks were bad, but my position is that we should be careful not to enact bad law just to be do something. I'm not saying that the Patriot Act is bad law, but I do have concerns.
