4 GOP Senators Hold Firm Against Patriot Act Renewal
Washington Post ^ | Charles Babington | Charles Babington

Posted on 12/20/2005 6:58:23 PM PST by ncountylee

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) could barely conceal his anger.

"The Patriot Act expires on December 31, but the terrorist threat does not," he told reporters at the Capitol yesterday. "Those on the Senate floor who are filibustering the Patriot Act are killing the Patriot Act."

There was just one problem. Well, four problems, actually. Four of the 46 senators using the delaying tactic to thwart the USA Patriot Act renewal are members of Frist's party. It is a pesky, irritating fact for Republicans who are eager to portray the impasse as Democratic obstructionism, and a ready-made rejoinder for Democrats expecting campaign attacks on the issue in 2006 and 2008.

The four Republican rebels -- Larry E. Craig (Idaho), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), John E. Sununu (N.H.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) -- have joined all but two Senate Democrats in arguing that more civil liberties safeguards need to be added to the proposed renewal of the Patriot Act.

Let me guess, Joe Lieberman is one of the Democrats that is on board with continuing the Patriot Act.

Who is the other?

"Craig is one of the most conservative members of the Senate.
What is going on in HIS mind?"

You answered your own question. He IS a Conservative. Big difference these days between a Conservative and a Republican.

The fact Chuck Hagel plans to run for President has been a joke (right???)... he can't possibly be this stupid and expect to even carry the primary.

Larry E. Craig (Idaho), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), John E. Sununu (N.H.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)

Not my representatives but I need to remember to send these folks a Christmas card and a thank you note

"Are these four ready to take personal responsibility for the next terrorist attack that may occur as a result of not renewing the Patriot Act?"

How about the rest just agree to extend it for a few months or a year? The powers stay as they are and get reviewed again later. As long as they are needed there should be no problem getting an extension. When they are no longer needed they get pulled. Extraordinary government powers *should* a temporary thing.

If I was a criminal and used electronic communications for some of my activities, I'd be concerned about getting caught in the spotlights being shined out there looking for terrorist activities.......

Why would the President have to sell the Patriot Act?

The problem with some idiots (in Congress) is that they forgot about the Planes hitting the buildings.

I wish we had a DVD of the whole uncensored WTC 9-11 Day, and take it with a portable Player around to some offices in the Sam Rayburn building and make some Senators watch it, and bring Fox News with me to film their reactions.

People should watch that, every few months, just for drill, to keep their head right.

I have a son living in Washington, D.C. I have another son who lives in Manhattan.

I want the Patriot Act renewed! The lives of my sons, as well as thousands of others, are one the line.

I'm a mother, hear me roar!!!

Didn't Murkowski barely win last year? Does she think her constituents will forget this by '08?

Craig is one of the most conservative members of the Senate. What is going on in HIS mind?

Perhaps, he is right. Think about it.

"send these four packing"

I'm hoping the Presidents' rising pol numbers will convince them that extending it is the "right thing" to do if they want re-elected.

We will be remembering these names. They had better hope there isn't another 9/11 while they are pitching their little temper tantrum.

Larry E. Craig (Idaho)

Chuck Hagel (Neb.)

John E. Sununu (N.H.)

Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)

But I'm going to say I'm a little leery of the Patriot Act myself;

I agree. The subpeona issue should get sorted out in favor of people's right to challenge them.
