December 18, 2005--In 1988, Democrat Joe Lieberman defeated maverick Republican Lowell Weicker to win his first of three terms in the U.S. Senate. Weicker later became Governor of Connecticut by running as an Independent.
The 74-year old Weicker is now considering challenging Lieberman once again. It's not revenge says Weicker, it's because of Lieberman's support for the Bush Administration's policy in Iraq.
A Rasmussen Reports survey shows that a Weicker candidacy might create serious problems for the incumbent Democrat. In a head-to-head match-up with no Republican candidate, Lieberman leads Weicker 54% to 32%.
However, running as an Independent, Weicker attracts 37% of votes from Democrats in the state. He is essentially tied with Lieberman among Connecticut liberals, among those who say getting troops home should be our top priority in Iraq, and among those who say the President is doing a poor job handling the situation in Iraq.
It is also interesting to note that, with no Republican candidate in the survey, Lieberman attracts support from a majority of GOP voters. Without those Republican votes, Lieberman's level of support would be under 40% statewide.

Call me crazy, but I'm pro-Lieberman here. I'd rather have a Democrat who is sometimes conservative than a Republican who never is.
I'd vote for Lieberman over any liberal Republican. At least Lieberman has shown some spine. Senators like Arlen Specator, who the President bailed out in the 2004 GOP primary, have no spine.

Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
Wouldn't it be great to see Bush campaign for Lieberman? As a gesture of bipartisanship, of course.
A 22 point difference is not a challenge. Its a joke. The box of Kleenex next to my computer could do better than a 22% difference against Lieberman.
Weiker is not a well liked politician, even in Connecticut. His name is being tossed around simply because the liberal brats in the media are throwing a hissy fit.
If Weiker wins as a democrat, then a Republican (or RINO) stands a really good chance of winning in Connecticut. If Weiker runs as an independent, he won't even be on the radar.
I'll take Lieberman over that big weenie Weicker any day.
Oh, for crying out loud.
I don't agree with Lieberman on everything, but the guy is a mensche.

Wouldn't have to think twice about that one!
I'm a conservative second, and a Republican third.
('NRA member' comes before both)
Anyone else see the irony of a Dimocrat holding a big lead, provided by GOP voters, while a RINO runs strong with Dim voters?
Just think how embarrassing it would be for the Dems if Lieberman switched parties. He'd make a better Republican than most New England RINOS at least.
Weicker is 74 fricking years old. Honestly, they should have a mandatory retirement age in Congress.
I hate Weicker. He foisted income tax on Connecticut. He is worse than a Democrat. My Dad stayed home rather than vote for that loser. I thought he was an independent?
Weicker is loathesome. I shed no tears when Lieberman beat him in '88. As for his age, 74 is young compared to some of the other old dinosaurs still in Congress, unfortunately, like Sen Byrd.
This 52-32 is interesting but in a general election there probably will be a Republican candidate too, unless the GOP were to cross endorse Lieberman. That would be pretty shocking though.
I do live in Connecticut and will be glad to vote for Lieberman. He may be a Democrat but he's a pretty honest guy and supports the President in the war on terror, even though it risks his political future.
Weicker is a tool who forced the income tax on us. He can go to hell. I'd vote for nearly ANYONE running against that old liar.
