In his demand for religiously-correct language this Christmas season, loudmouth Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly blurted out one of his silliest, most uninformed opinions yet. His sham slam on the Madison media -- of which the Wisconsin State Journal is the leading force -- went like this:
"Now this is a conservative city, Richmond," O'Reilly said last week, referring to a Virginia newspaper that had criticized him. "I mean, this is not Madison, Wisconsin, where you expect those people to be communing with Satan up there in the Madison, Wisconsin media."
As a matter of fact, it's much too cold up here in Madison for the hell-fired devil. The low temperature Monday morning at the airport was minus 5.
Surely Satan would be much more comfy basking in the hot air frothing from O'Reilly's mouth.
If O'Reilly knew anything about the State Journal, much less Madison, he'd realize his folly.
It just so happens, Bill, that the State Journal every Christmas Day on its front page publishes word-for-word the story of the birth of Jesus, according to St. Luke.
How's that for some good news?
This newspaper also raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each Christmas season for our 87-year-old Empty Stockings Club. So far this year we've raised $266,000. The money will make sure more than 8,000 poor children can receive a toy on Christmas Day.
Madison's churches, synagogues and mosques fill for services. And our great city is filled with individuals and community groups of all kinds doing God's work by feeding, healing and helping the needy. We also strive to help the needy help themselves.
Living your faith is more important in Madison than bombastically proclaiming it. And respecting people who hold different religious beliefs is simple neighborliness.
The vast majority of Madisonians do wish one another "merry Christmas." Yet it's no big deal if someone says "season's greetings" or "happy holidays" or -- as President Bush and the first lady wrote on their card this year -- "best wishes for a holiday season of hope and happiness."
Madison is certainly not the front lines for O'Reilly's imaginary "war on Christmas."
The blowhard broadcaster needs to lighten up. He's becoming a certified Scrooge.
No, it backed local Green party members. It told voters to vote for Kerry, but it also discussed how Kerry was not "Left enough"
These aren't Americans... they're southern Canadians.
"This was the city where the kids couldn't ring bells for the Salvation Army because some parent got offended? I'll bet they wish each other 'Merry Christmas!'"
I've posted on this subject in the past weeks. I did my part today at East Towne Mall, and I must admit I was braced for controversy, but every single person that gave us some jing in the red Salvation Army bucket was really friendly and also responded with a "Merry Christmas" when we threw one their way, too. (The free Candy Canes night have helped, LOL!)
Madison gets a bad rap, and I'm a BIG contributor to smacking them down as much as possible, but for the most part, from what I observed TODAY, most of them are decent, caring people. They have no control over the Yellow/Red Journalism that's foisted upon us for the most part. In my observations today, and most days, I really don't think that Madison people are politcally aware. I think that for the most part, they really don't give a rip as to what's going on around them, and that saddens me. It's like the blanket of Socialism can gently settle around their shoulders in these cold winter months, and they just apreciate the warmth or something.
This is a very, very perplexing place to live. It's easy to paint everyone with a broad brush, but from what I witnessed today, people around here aren't ALL bad.
(Awe, Jeeze! She's going soft on us in the Spirit of Christmas or something, LOL!)
*Ahem* I am southern Canadian.
Wisconsin State Journal is looking to boost subscriptions by creating a fight with Bill O. The Liberals in Madison will follow like lemmings.
The lowest level of the Inferno has the occupants frozen into the ice.
Don't worry, global warming is on the way! Can't do much about the Trotskists though.
"Those trinkets he plugs are 100% for charity. Obviously you have assumed he was benefiting personally from those sales. You sound like a liberal coming to conclusions based on what you heard and feel instead of on the truth."
Really? O'Righteous doesn't make any money on the "O'Reilly Factor for Kids," or any of those other books the wanna-be-adulterer is constantly shilling? You sure it's not just his web Premium Memberships where that is the case?
How dare you patronize Target--the abusers of the Salvation Army!
"Did this paper endorse Kerry? How about Feingold? Maybe that Kohl too?"
They probably endorsed Khrushchev too, for that matter. I think they want to secede to Oh, Kanada anyway.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
Thanks for the ping!
The State-Journal is, believe it or not, fairly conservative. However the other Mad City rag is the Capital-Times which on the front page advertises itself as Wisconsins's leading "progressive" rag. The Cap-Times editor John Nichols is a leading contributor to The Nation and other far-left scandal sheets.
I believe the State-Journal endorsed Bush in the last two elections. However The Madison Capital-Times most likely endorsed Castro....or would have liked to. Kerry was probably too conservative for the Cap-Times.
You're so right. O'Reilly is a fraud......Fox News was selling holiday ornaments on their site and on O'Reilly's site till PMSNBC ran a story on their hypocrisy (the irony).
Shame on me! But if we did background on just about any retailer I'm sure we'd find enough reason to avoid them all.
