Researchers Find Barbie Is Often Mutilated

LONDON - Barbie, beware. The iconic plastic doll is often mutilated at the hands of young girls, according to research published Monday by British academics. "The girls we spoke to see Barbie torture as a legitimate play activity, and see the torture as a 'cool' activity," said Agnes Nairn, one of the University of Bath researchers. "The types of mutilation are varied and creative, and range from removing the hair to decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving."

Mattel U.K. said that despite the findings of "this very small group of children, we know that there are millions of girls in the U.K. and across the world that love and enjoy playing with Barbie and will continue to do so in the future."

I saw a great 'political' cartoon about Barbie and Ken a while back. The first panel shows a lib couple downstairs telling their friends, "We didn't buy our daughter stereotypical sexists toys for her birthday." The next panel shows a young girl holding a hammer in one hand, and a screwdriver in the other, as she supplied the voices of them talking to one another. "Barbie do you want to go to the dance?" and the reply "Sure Ken, I'd love to."

Doll mutilation?

I was once fishing a remote spot and stumbled across a doll hanging by the neck from a tree... tied with a hangmans knot. It was one of those larger dolls that girls had back in the 60's. Nearby, I saw the dead carcass of a German Shepherd.

Disturbing... to say the least.

I know...and it was silver, not even crappy Barbie pink!

It was a tragic accident that was a result of a party in the Barbie dream pool.

There is nothing new under the sun! Back in the '60s, we tortured our Barbies, too. We "dyed" their hair with Magic Markers, cut their fingernails and toenails, used ball-point pens for "makeup", pierced their ears with straight pins...and two Barbies tied on each end of a two-foot-length rope made a neat bolo!

When I was young I don't recall torturing my dolls as a "cool" activity

I agree with you, distrubing

These people that are mutilating Barbie dolls will rue the day.

Because in 2050 mint Barbie dolls with the original box from 2005 will be worth $500.00.

They didn't have Barbie when I was a kid. We had to settle for performing surgery on teddy bears.

We used hair spray blow torches and red fingernail polish for the blood. They melted really neat.

That's nothing. They should have seen what we used to do to poor old GI Joe. Lets see...

1. Shot into the air with an Estees rocket (astronaut training).
2. Blown apart with a variety of fireworks and illegaly purchased sub-munitions (EOD training, caught in artillery barrage, grenade cooked off early, caught in minefield, etc.)
3. Doused with lighter fluid and set ablaze (napalm/flamethower attack)
4. Shot with a variety of BB/pellet/.22 caliber projectiles (just for the heck of it).
5. Placed under rear tire of dad's car before backing out of driveway (run over by a tank).
6. Tossed off of second story roof of house with full kit (chute failure during comabt jump).
7. Tug-o-war with pet dog (Joe gets attacked by genetically enhanced mutant creature).

And much, much more. A childs imagination is a wonderful thing.

"We toys can see EVERYTHING!"

I like Sid from Toy Story. He reminds me of my brothers and myself when we were kids. Andy was too much of a girly-boy. What self-respecting boy would have a Little Bo-Peep doll?

I saw that too. Amazing how they shift and wrinkle, and twist and turn. What we'd give for a good statesman as opposed to all of these politicians.

Ghost of Christmas Past

On the website, known as "Wide Awake," The Prophet had posted a self-authored essay called "Barbie Doll, The Ultimate ***." His essay chronicled the sexual torture of Barbie in an extremely sadistic, vicious manner. When John Ramsey found JonBenet, the killer had left the girl's Barbie doll nightgown beside her. Few people around town knew The Prophet. But during his college years, the manager of a local diner allowed him to hang a mobile of naked Barbie dolls from the restaurant's ceiling. As I was investigating The Prophet in the summer of 1998, I found a similar doll in the Ramsey's front yard, stuffed inside a tiny white sandal. I wondered if the shoe had once belonged to JonBenet. The blonde doll had a little white rope around her neck and a red spot marked on her gown by her vaginal area. I immediately called the police who collected the item into evidence. In his book Mindhunter, former FBI profiler John Douglas-who was employed by the Ramsey's to profile the killer-described men who torture Barbie dolls and predicted they would eventually advance to torturing small, helpless girls. The Prophet's Internet site featured strange graphics, with a variety of different kinds of hearts. Some hearts had spikes coming out of them. I recalled that when JonBenet's body was found, a small shape like a red heart had been drawn on her left hand. So I decided to knock on The Prophet's apartment door in order to discuss these issues. A student told me the previous tenant moved to San Francisco. Today, The Prophet lives and works in Denver and remains among the ranks of the city's 140 "possible suspects."

Don't tell Reuters what happens to most GI Joes (the dolls, that is).

Obviously the doll was overcome with guilt. :-/

My sister and I, good Catholic school children, used to behead and otherwise torture our Barbies as we pretended they were martyrs for the faith.

Too much 'Lives of the Saints' at too young an age? : )
