The commission said the English-only rule serves no purpose other than to discriminate against non-English speaking individuals.

This is a problem, how?

God forbid a buisness owner makes his own rules without the ACLU style communists getting involved.

"...his staff could be ordered to undergo diversity training or cultural sensitivity training."

Stalinist re-education. After all, "diversity is our strength." No matter how obviously untrue.

How can we fight this unAmerican garbage?

Ullum could be ordered to pay for advertisements about nondiscrimination, and his staff could be ordered to undergo diversity training or cultural sensitivity training.

Well?  There it is...in plain English...the fact that we have totally lost our freedoms and now need to cower in fear of ending up in a gulag or psychiatric reindoctrination center to get our minds right.  That is, right as far as the marxist, leftist, American hating liberals are concerned.

That statement should absolutely begin an armed rebellion to take our country back.  So far, we have lost it.

How can we fight this unAmerican garbage?

Governor Taft appointed three of these nanny staters, to borrow <1/1,000,000th%'s label. They include:

  1. Aaron Wheeler, Sr.
  2. Charles (Charlie) E. Winburn
  3. Jeanine P. Donaldson

RINO Voinovich appointed Nirmal K. Sinha.

The Civil Rights Commission was established in 1959 by the legislature and is governed by Section 4112 of the Ohio Revised Code.

I'd say it's time to look at rewriting this code, and it's time to ask Governor Taft and Senator Voinovich what on earth they were thinking?

RE: "Are they going to force him to either learn Spanish or get an interpreter?"

Careful what you wish for. Stranger things have happened...

"I don't see a reason to send testers in. ... Service is being denied."

Donaldson could have walked in when they were open and ordered a burger and fries in Mandarin and she wouldn't have been served unless one of the staff spoke Mandarin. Is that discrimination?

i'd be surprised if ACLU didn't side with hispanics stating that this sign infringed on the hispanics' right to free speech.

Any American who has ever lived abroad, knows that beer sounds pretty much like beer, whatever language you order it in.

Russian - piva

close enough

Does anyone know what power the civil rights commission has in Ohio. Is there determination binding or can the bar owner request a jury trial?

Mr. Ullum has never refused to serve anyone. However, he has been stiffed by these so-called non-English-speaking patrons. When presented with the check, all of a sudden, they don't understand English! BTW -- another owner of an establishment (a billiard parlor, I think) has posted the same sign in his place in solidarity with Mr. Ullum. This group is now going after him. Un-freakin'-believable!

Seems to me he could stick in their eye by making it a private club. If you wanted to become a member, you would have to request a membership card in English and pay nominal dues of $0.50 to be credited against your first purchase.

Or "sör" (hungarian), either.

Matter of fact, there ain't too many hungarian words that look anything like their English counterparts.

At least when I was there, it was like some alien language...

The 5-0 vote transfers this case to an administrative law judge, who will decide what to do.

The Cincinnati Enquirer article and comment on this was hilarious, but we can't post even excerpts of that rag here.

The Enquirer called for the bar owner to hire an employee who could speak Spanish. Somebody wondered why the Enquirer doesn't print a Spanish-language edition if they are so culturally sensitive.

Nobody has found even one person who was refused service at this establishment. The whole case is a joke.

Ohio law says it is unlawful for any proprietor of a place of public accommodation to deny the full enjoyment of the accommodations based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or ancestry.

The commission said the English-only rule serves no purpose other than to discriminate against non-English speaking individuals.

...Ummm....so, if the rule serves no purpose other than language discrimination....and the law says nothing about discrimination based on language...how exactly is this illegal?

Seems to me he could stick in their eye by making it a private club.

That might be one way for him to retreat from the long arm of this unchecked political power.

I object to any official actions against this private business owner, citizen, and taxpayer. He should be left alone by the law, which should protect him from the meddlesome reach of tyrants.

Nope, doesn't say "language " anywhere in there.

Nor "stupidity," either; if it did, damn few lawyers'd get served...

Isn't that what happened to the South Vietnamese politicians and educators after the communist North took control of the south?
