CHICAGO Mayor Richard M. Daley was explaining away $48 million in cost overruns for the renovation of a terminal at O'Hare International Airport when a regular at his daily news conferences wondered if, 5 or 10 years hence, he would be offering similar excuses for how his $15 billion expansion of the airport busted its budget.

"I'm coming back in 5 or 10 years?" Daley interrupted, deflecting the inquiry with a snorted chuckle of surprise. "Thank you!"

In the past, no one questioned the longevity of Daley, a Democrat whose staggering margins in four re-elections helped him inherit the title originally bestowed on his father, the legendary political boss Richard J. In the past, no one questioned the longevity of Daley, a Democrat whose staggering margins in four re-elections helped him inherit the title originally bestowed on his father, the legendary political boss Richard J. Daley - Mayor for Life. That changed this year with the eruption of a ballooning corruption scandal over hiring and contracts that has led to 30 indictments, a dozen resignations from the mayor's cabinet and Daley himself being interrogated by federal prosecutors.

Daley is as crooked as the day is long, and his current evasion of federal prosecution takes "plausible deniability" to a new level. It's a shame that his only credible challenger seems to be Jesse Jackson Jr., who if he is anything like his father might actually be a bigger charlatan than Daley himself.

Why does it seem so impossible to elect conservatives to govern big cities?

Avenge Meigs Field!

Beat me to it! I wonder if anybody who had an airplane at Meigs when the ruways were bulldozed ever collected any money for reimbursement for the costs of disassembly and removal of their aircraft? I heard there were 12 or so there when the midnight raid on the runway happened...
