CNN) -- If the results of a recent poll pan out, voters will see two big names from the Big Apple on the ballot in November 2008.
Those names are Sen. Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Republican.
The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Thursday indicated Clinton and Giuliani were the early favorites to win their respective party's nomination.
But those polled said they believe the former first lady would have a smoother path to the nomination than her GOP counterpart.
Conducted December 9-11, the telephone poll asked 393 registered voters who described themselves as Republicans and 446 registered voters who described themselves as Democrats who they were most likely to support in their respective primaries.
The survey had a sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
Clinton snared the majority of the Democratic voters polled. And with more than two years before the primaries, she was ahead of her two nearest potential competitors by nearly 30 percentage points.
Giuliani, on the other hand, edged out Sen. John McCain of Arizona by only 8 percentage points, 30-22.
Another 18 percent of those polled selected Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, despite her repeated assertion that she has no plans to run.
Bringing up the rear on the GOP side were Sen. George Allen, of Virginia, 7 percent; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, 3 percent; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3 percent; and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, 2 percent.

"And he accurately describes it as sounding like everyone's ex-wife."
I nominate Hillary Rotten for Ambassador to North Korea
And he lost.
I think he would too. I would love to see him go head to head with Teddy Kennedy on the Senate Floor!
True but Lazio did not have enough time and did the wrong thing by attacking Hillary personally with that piece of paper asking her to sign it. People got turned off by that and it made Hillary look like a victim (which of course we all know she is not).
Rudy may pick up a lot of moderate voters but lose a lot of conservative voters like myself.
Yes, Rudy V Lard Ass would be a joy!
Just bring up the fact that :
1. She actually conceived and sponsored a plan to place 14% of the US economy under government control. That's Hillary Care. A plan that was over one-thousand pages in length and so radical even Dems in the House and Senate rejected it.
2. The Rose Law Firm billing records and their mysterious disappearance and reappearance.
3. The 'suicide' of Vince Foster....
4. Chelsea's parentage....
Oh I could spend all morning making a list but.....
Former Senator from South Dakota, Tom Daschle, reported from his wife's Virginia mansion that he has not ruled out a Presidential bid. If Daschle were to run for president he like George McGovern would not come close to winning their home state of South Dakota.
my early prediction:
Allen/Rice 53%
vs
Clinton/Barack 47%
The only potential problem I see is a McCain independent run (ala Perot) when he gets trounced in the GOP primaries or a Clinton/McCain ticket which I think is unlikely.
LOL Rudy vs. Wide Load!
Allen/Rice 53% vs Clinton/Barack 47%
Allen's stock just went way, way down in my book. He's come out weak on defending the border.
I agree McCain is the wildcard and a very loose cannon, IMO. He wants desperately to be king and I believe he'll stop at nothing to sit on the throne.
The media is trying to pre-select the Republican presidential field by limiting the pool to two RINOs who will not win the Nation-wide primary. If cross dressing Rudy or Christian bashing Mcaniac do win the primary, they will split the party and Hillary will win. That is why all we hear about is "Which Rino will win the Republican nomination?"
> [Rudy] once said that if Pataki decided not to run for Governor that he would run. I wonder if he is going to try that.
That would make it Giuliani vs. Spitzer. Even though Spitzer has already been annointed, it would be a heck of a race.
I would like to see Colin Powell get into NY politics.
Thank you.
I am tired of the Northeast RINO love-fest being foisted on all of us "Red Stater's" (closer to the REAL America the founders intended) by the left-wing media, and some on FR.
I don't think I said that. I'm not against Rudy running. In fact if its a choice between him and McCain which I think it will be - I will vote for Rudy. McCain seems frightened to death of Rudy.
Good points. I have a fear that the 2008 primaries are going to be huge battle royale in the GOP. It'll be interesting, with many claims and counterclaims as to who can beat the Democrat, and frequent announcements by freepers that they will never vote for xxx and will leave the GOP if s/he gets nominated.
He did not 'attack her with a piece of paper.' What he did was blown out of all proportion, and yes, he did get into the race too late. Look what happened in Illinois last year when the Republican candidate for the US Senate dropped out at the last minute. They ran Alan Keyes and he got his clock cleaned.
WHY is this acceptable to people, so-called "Republicans", living in the Northeast?
To most of us in the rest of America, it is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE to vote for someone who is willing to change their stance, especially on important issues, just for political expediency.
When speaking of VERY important issues like gun control, abortion, etc., a person willing to change his tune in an effort to win the Presidency (ala Hillary, Kerry, etc.), can NOT be trusted to be the leader of the free world.
AND, if he runs and DOESN'T try to change who he is, he is also unacceptable to the vast majority of those in "Red States" America.
