New Jersey Bear Hunt Ends With 280 Kills
Associated Press ^ | Dec 11. 2005 | MATTHEW VERRINDER

About 280 bears were killed in New Jersey's six-day hunt aimed at thinning out the burgeoning population, which ended with more than 100 protesters waiting for hunters to emerge from the woods with their kills.

The hunt ended shortly after dusk Saturday with fewer bears killed than the 328 bagged in 2003, according to preliminary figures.

Black bears, once near extinction in the state, are now a common sight, menacing people, scampering through yards and rummaging in trash.

"I believe we'll now see a reduction in nuisance complaints, a reduction in serious complaints and that we'll get more information about these bears because of this," said Martin McHugh, director of the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife.

He would not say whether he expected another hunt next year, but noted the state's black bear management plan recommends hunts in 2006 or 2007.

"There are no alternatives to manage the bear population next to a hunt," McHugh said.

More than 100 protesters, chanting and waving signs that read "I'd take a bullet for a bear," gathered at Wawayanda State Park in Vernon, where hunters brought their dead bears to be weighed and inspected.

Six were arrested, apparently for moving outside the permitted protest area.

"This is strictly a trophy hunt," said Lynda Smith, director of the West Milford-based Bear Education and Resource Group, who was among those arrested.

Sounds like New Jersey needs to thin out their animal rights activists.

I think I already read about this incident -- in a Phillip K Dick novel... anyway, what would she do with the bear once she won it?

Had a lion hunt here in South Dakota. You should have heard all the whining and moaning by the animal rights believers. Couldn't read the editorial page without someone bleeding all over the page for and in behalf of the precious pussy cats. The hunt was so organized as to protect the precious puddies beyond reasonable, but even one dead lion was just too much for the other side.

"I'd take a bullet for a bear."

So is that why you were running around with a little sign and chanting nursery rhymes?

Yea. They always say stuff like that but they never seem to actually do it.

Too bad.

It's not nice to tempt men with guns....

What a bunch of clymers. I'd love to see one of them deal with a bear that has broken into his home to chow down.

If only... yeah, strictly a trophy hunt, so, what's the problem?

I'll say it. It's pathetic someone would kill a beautiful animal just for their ego.

So, how many cases of documented ego killings are you familiar with as you sling around your O P I N I O N as if it were fact. Animals are here for the benefit and use of man. Much of that use involves slaughter. Hunting does indeed involve the killing of the animal.

The animal is fulfilling the design of its creation. Something that cannot be said for a great deal of the human populace. Knowing the power man has over the animal kingdom, I find it hard to believe that ego has much to do with hunting or ranching. Remaining comments self censored.

I tend to agree with that.

However, being a former hog farmer, and thus responsible for about 250,000 animal deaths, I can say with assurance that most animal killings are not done for ego.

And you aren't slinging your O P I N I O N around as fact? I bet that's about all you do on here.

So prove to me by DOCUMENTED cases all animals killings are only for food, shelter and clothing and don't involve a trorphy or ego.

Animals are our responsibility and part of God's creation. If you are familiar with the N.T then you should know God CARES even when a sparrow falls .He didn't put animals on earth to be treated as sport but for food ,shelter, and clothing.

Trophies or not, the bear hunters are performing a public service. As bear population has expanded, so have attacks on humans.

Lynda is nothing more than a left-wing, anti-hunting zealot. The BEAR group is nothing more than her front to sap $$ from unassuming people that think they're actually helping the Black Bear population in some way or form.

Instead, Lynda is milking her contributors so she can pay her legal bills and bail bonds, while keeping her face in the local paper. A couple hundred thousand bucks to drive hopeless lawsuits and have her 15 minutes of fame every year. She's a pathetic hack.
