Interesting question asked by the researcher, Nweeia; "Why would a tusk break the rules of normal (evolution) development by expressing millions of sensory pathways that connect its nervous system to the frigid arctic environment?

Interesting bit of natural history.
Can't imagine a narwhale toothache.

Wonder what the Narwhale tooth fairy is like?

If I was a Narwhal, I'd use my tusk to puncture little kids' beach balls. Why don't they look into that?
(They think they're so smart, with their fancy book-learnin')

there is no way that those "teeth" are that sensitive. If they were any bump or touch would be tremendously painful.
Unless of course there is a sort natural "lidocaine" that will protect the animal...

I don't know why but this article reminded me of a friend I had years ago, a champion water-skier, he always maintained that the male and female anatomy was designed by a kill-joy; in his opinion the reproductive systems of both should have been located where it was more accessible. His at the end of his index finger and Hers at shoulder height would have been ideal, he thought.

Yes, interesting. I recall reading that long-ago mariners would sell such tusks to unsuspecting rubes as "unicorn horns."
Pinging a few evos, not the whole gang.

>why does the narwhal, or unicorn, whale have an 8-foot-long tooth emerging from its head
One Tusk to rule them all
One Tusk to find them
One Tusk to bring them all
And in the water bind them
In the Arctic where Nanook rubs it . . .
