U.S. Appeals Court rejects gay Zimbabwe man's appeal for asylum

A federal appeals court in St. Louis decided 2-1 on Tuesday to deny asylum to a
man who claims he was persecuted for homosexuality in his home country,
Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe declared homosexuality illegal in 1998, and is
reported to have called gays "lower than pigs and dogs."

William J. Kimumwe, recently of Minneapolis, said he fears persecution. He
cited cases from his past in Zimbabwe, in which he said he was expelled from
school for having sex with another male student at age 12, in 1995, and
detained for two months in 1998 after a fellow student reported a sexual
encounter.

Kimumwe said he came to the U.S. in 2002, was eventually turned down for asylum
and appealed.

The court panel ruled that Zimbabwe authorities reacted to Kimumwe's conduct,
not necessarily his homosexuality, and noted that he had admitted getting the
other student drunk in the second case.

Obviously, one hopes he isn't attacked or murdered. But giving him or others like him political asylum on this basis isn't a good idea. Let Canada have him.

Granting asylum to illegal immigrants must be done for only a very few, valid reasons. The court was right in denying this person asylum. If they want in, go through the proper and legal visa and immigrant procedures.

The court panel ruled that Zimbabwe authorities reacted to Kimumwe's conduct, not necessarily his homosexuality, and noted that he had admitted getting the other student drunk in the second case.

They should have added that choosing to engage in disordered and unhealthy activities, e.g. homosexual activities, is objectively endangering ones health and risking ones life --The dangers inherent to disordered activities one chooses to pursue can only be avoided by avoiding the disordered activities themselves NOT by doing them somewhere else...

I'm utterly amazed. There's something that Mugabe and I agree on!
