Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has expressed surprise and disappointment after hearing of racially charged criticism made by Philadelphia NAACP president J. Whyatt Mondesire in a Nov. 27 column in the Philadelphia Sun.
[snip]
"Especially being the same color I am," McNabb told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Obviously if it's someone else who is not African-American, it's racism. But when someone of the same race talks about you because you're selling out because you're not running the ball, it goes back to: What are we really talking about here?
[snip]
"I always thought the NAACP supported African-Americans and didn't talk bad about them. Now you learn a little bit more."

That'd be like someone from the KKK attacking a white person for betraying his race and claiming it isn't racist.
What do you mean? By definition Black people cannot be racist. /sarc
Obviously I'm in the minority but I don't care what color McNabb is and I don't think it's such a big deal when people criticize him.
I feel the same way; goes with the territory.
I used to think McNabb did as well. But after these comments I'm not so sure. He certainly seems to frame issues in terms of color, given the fact that "obviously" it's racism when a white person criticizes him - but the NAACP owes him blind allegiance due to the color of his skin.
Well, McNabb himself obviously cares what color he is, and he prefers to allow than to define him rather than his character or his accomplishments.
LOL. The NAACP supports themselves Mr. McNabb, just ask Dr. Condi Rice........
I've always been a big McNabb supporter, but these comments are disturbing
My sentiments exactly. I've been a McNabb guy since he was at 'Cuse, and thought he handled the "Rush" tempest in a teapot quite well. This one, however, I'm not entirely pleased with.
I think there were some quotes in the Sunday Inky (I can look 'em up and link them for you if your not in the Del Valley, Nit) where he said something like "Rush went against me and he lost his job and so did T.O." that rubbed me the wrong way.
Maybe there's some degree of fatigue in dealing with personal attack after personal attack, that more or less is uninvited.
The last Eagles lightning rod I remember like this was Ricky Watters, but he ALWAYS brought it on himself, be it "for who, for what?" or having his (smokin' hot) girlfriend berrate John Gruden over carries, Ricky had it coming to him. Donovan has always appeared to be the good soldier, the company man, yet he sure gets more than his fair share of attacks.

If you can find 'em (or point me in their direction), that'd be great. I'm not in the area anymore.
As you said, this may be exasperation speaking more than anything else. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but too many comments like these and my opinion will change in a hurry.
Mondesire, the Sun's publisher and editor, wrote that McNabb is a "mediocre talent" who tries to disguise his ineffectiveness behind "some concocted reasoning" that African-American quarterbacks who scramble are somehow lesser "field generals."
Can you imagine the outcry if Rush Limbaugh had said that instead of what he did say? OMG. There probably would have been rioting and looting.
Mondesire also claimed that McNabb's "failure as a team leader off the field" led to the Terrell Owens situation. If McNabb "had the courage to offer only a tiny fraction" of his bonus to Owens and running back Brian Westbrook, Mondesire wrote, the "media circus" could have been avoided.
CLASSIC LIBERALISM/SOCIALISM! Take from the rich (McNabb in this case) and give to the "poor" (T.O. - whatever! LOL), even if poor, poor, T.O. agreed to the deal and then wouldn't live up to it. McNabb is the QB, NOT the contract negotiator for the team. Geez, this guy is an idiot. Westbrook got his deal done. I'm not aware that McNabb had to hand over any money for that to do be done.
I think the problem with McNabb's "leadership" is that he trusted Reid and Eagles management to take care of business with T.O. and put him in his place. They didn't do it, for whatever reason. Ultimately, I put this whole debacle on Reid. HE is the one who brought T.O. in. HE is the one who let T.O. be the most obnoxious jerk the NFL has ever seen last year, and HE is the one who let the off-season drama drag on and on and on.
You can imagine my chagrin when I roomed with a black Air Force Officer. A bunch of his friends came over to watch an NFL game. we swigged beer, ate chips and I fell off the couch in a major fit when these guys began shouting "Come on nigger! "Move the ball." and other such racial epithets.
I asked them howcum they used the "N" word and they said that between themselves it was okay, sorta.
I've come to the conclusion that the only way to eliminate race as a subject is to do what I did inthe 2000 census. the question asked "What race do you consider yourself?" there were several answers includng other.
I selected other and entered HUMAN!
I think I can criticize Donovan McNabb and not be racist, just like he could criticize me and not be racist. He's a good quarterback. I don't know what all the complaining is about. He was playing with one or more injuries. Professional football is punishing enough when you're not hurt.
Here ya go full article (you may have to register, the entire article's probably not worthwhile IMO)
"We were laughing and joking about it a couple of days ago," McNabb said. "Everybody that seems to take a shot at me either loses their job or more things are found out about them that they don't want people to know."
It's actually a little worse than I recalled. I'm with you though, I'll cut him a break at this point, but he's not headed in the right direction.

Exactly what Rush Limbaugh said.......he also added the McNabb was getting the short end of the stick from the Philly press.....my how things change.
Racism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and, to the NAACP and the Rainbow Coalition crowd, there is beauty everywhere you look.
