Betrayal of the struggle

While not every vestige of racial discrimination has been eliminated, it is nowhere near the barrier it was yesteryear, but you'd think discrimination is everywhere listening to some of today's black politicians and civil rights leaders. One wonders what those blacks, who lived during the era of gross discrimination and are now deceased, would think about so much of today's behavior, rhetoric and excuses.

What would they think about black neighborhoods, once thriving economic centers that have been turned into economic wastelands by a level of criminal activity previously unknown? During my youth, walking through some of Philadelphia's predominantly white neighborhoods, one felt a sense of relief as we approached a black neighborhood. Today, it might be the other way around. What would they think about predominantly black schools where violence and intimidation are the order of the day, with police cars outside and metal detectors inside? What would they think about black students who seek academic excellence being mocked, intimidated and assaulted by their peers for "acting white"?

"While not every vestige of racial discrimination has been eliminated"

True - white people are still around and we all know that they're ALL racist, it's just ingrained in their genetics.

And that's not a racial slur - it's just common knowledge.

You're being sarcastic, right?

We know that not all white people are racists. We also know that racism, both black and white, still exists in the hearts of some Americans. If anyone tries to deny it, they are deluding themselves.

Our black antecedents would be dismayed that some of us are squandering the opportunities that they fought and died for. The time for exuses is over. It is time to take action by making sure our children know the value of commitment, education and hard work. Welfare created a slave mentality among too many of us in the black community. Some wait, wait, wait for everything to be dropped in their laps. Someone has got to teach the children to go out and get what they need through education.

Walter Williams is a treasure it's just so sad that voices like his are not used as the voice of "black leadership" if there is or should be such a thing, rather than the povery pimps, Jackson, Sharpton, Mfumi, et al.

I have a problem with the use of the term "black leadership" anyway, because it implies that those leaders speak for all black people speak for all of us. They do not. Those "leaders" spend too much time looking for offenses and not enough resources on what our community really needs. Education, promoting business ownership, promoting abstinence for our youth and promoting commited two-parent homes.
