As the US Congress considers some tough immigration proposals to tighten the entry process into the country, a new study shows that of the 35.2 million foreign-born population in America in 2005, around 1.4 million are Indians.
There are 35.2 million foreign-born people with the number of illegal immigrants anywhere between 9 to 13 million, according to the study by the Centre for Immigration Studies.
"The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded -- two-and-a-half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," said by Steven Camarota, director of research for the Centre.
Of the 35.2 million foreign born immigrants in the United States in 2005, South Asia would account for 1.8 million with India taking the bulk of this figure with 1.411 millions and accounting for a citizenship rate of nearly 34 per cent.
About 12.1 per cent of the current US population was born in another country, the highest percentage since 1920, according to Census figures.
Overall Mexico will come away with the highest number of foreign immigrants at nearly 11 million which will be followed by East Asia, South Asia (India) and Vietnam in South East Asia.
Statistics show that as far as India is concerned, the period 2000 to 2005 showed a sharp upswing in the number of immigrants at nearly 460,000 for the 5-year period.
The pre-1980 statistics show an immigrant population number for India at 170,000, rising to 209,000 between 1980 and 1989 and to 573,000 between 1990 and 1999.
No problem with that.. As long as an immigrant is legal- no matter where they are from, I welcome them with open arms.
I wonder how many adult Indian immigrants are employed?
Every East Indian is a legal immigrant........unlike the "process" for illegals, the selection process for legal immigration is lengthy and closely controlled (as it ought to be).
Must be pretty close to 100%.....visa rules prevent H1B visa holders from staying if they lose their jobs.
Not only that, what percent have college degrees and professional jobs?
Probably most of them. They come as H1Bs, get green cards, and buy houses. Then they lobby against more H1Bs, and are opposed to the idea of moving jobs to India.
So, I guess that means that the U.S. DOES NOT need increased immigration, at least for about a decade.
So much for the pity-stories as to whoa-is-us-we-need-more-immigrants crowd.
I have a problem with it. We had to sell and move from our last house because of our next door Indian or Paki neighbors. They do NOT assimilate.
They have no clue what water is for, their lawn and all the landscaping died. There were about 10 of them living in a 4 bedroom house, mostly adult males. They drank like fish and then would walk out their front door and pee on their wall in the front yard. They began "investing in ice cream trucks which they then drove parked on their front lawn by the front door (3 of them).
They made my life a living hell. When we began looking for another house to buy I drove all the neighborhoods and made sure there were none living there before I would even look at a house.
There really are reasons people do not want to live by them.
Yup. I doubt many of them are on government assistance!
That has nothing to do with immigration status.. hell drive into any back woods community around the country and you'll see people whose family has been here for generations act worse than that. I know of one old lady a block a way from me in probably a 500k house that almost describes the family you had to live next to.
The odor of their cultural food on the stove nauseates me.
I'm sorry, but I think you just got bad luck with neighbors, and that can happen no matter what their background. I grew up in an area with a heavy South Asian immigrant population, and one which drew from many classes of society and not just the educated elite. The parents assimilate as well as any immigrants do (it's never a complete process) and the kids assimilate totally. South Asian immigrants are a credit to the country and are going to help America keep its competitive edge.
At my place, there is a lot of talk among the Indian guys about lawnmowers and snowblowers.
Of course, these are guys who have bought a $600K house for a family of 4.
"There really are reasons people do not want to live by them."
WOW........did they eat babies too? Here are a few pointers for you:
"Indian or Paki neighbors"
Indians and Pakis are not the same people (the difference is Islam). The British bombings, the first WTC bombing, terrorists in Afghanistan, etc are all Paki creations. You'll never find Indians revolting against the country they live in....Pakis, on the other hand, do this all the time.
Second, the fact that Indians don't assimilate is pure slander and is based on your stereotyped impressions of one neighbour (whose antecendents you are not even aware of). So much for your opinions.
Go back, do some research, and you'll find out that there are no India Towns in nthe US (unlike China towns). I'll post official USG statistics that show the sucess and assimilation of Indians in US society but I don't think the truth is going to change your mind.
Here is one lesson that you can take out of this post: Indians and Pakis (and Arabs) are NOT the same. Repeat after me....
The point was...........legal or illegal, why do we NEED people like that to immigrate here? Do we have a shortage of offensive people? I think not. Immigration whould be based on whether or not they have something of value to add to our society imo.
Well I will not argue the fine points with you. You live next to them and watch your property value gain nothing in 10 yrs time. I won't.
