1.4 million immigration population in US from India

As the US Congress considers some tough immigration proposals to tighten the entry process into the country, a new study shows that of the 35.2 million foreign-born population in America in 2005, around 1.4 million are Indians.

There are 35.2 million foreign-born people with the number of illegal immigrants anywhere between 9 to 13 million, according to the study by the Centre for Immigration Studies.

"The 35.2 million immigrants living in the country in March 2005 is the highest number ever recorded -- two-and-a-half times the 13.5 million during the peak of the last great immigration wave in 1910," said by Steven Camarota, director of research for the Centre.

Of the 35.2 million foreign born immigrants in the United States in 2005, South Asia would account for 1.8 million with India taking the bulk of this figure with 1.411 millions and accounting for a citizenship rate of nearly 34 per cent.

About 12.1 per cent of the current US population was born in another country, the highest percentage since 1920, according to Census figures.

Overall Mexico will come away with the highest number of foreign immigrants at nearly 11 million which will be followed by East Asia, South Asia (India) and Vietnam in South East Asia.

Statistics show that as far as India is concerned, the period 2000 to 2005 showed a sharp upswing in the number of immigrants at nearly 460,000 for the 5-year period.

The pre-1980 statistics show an immigrant population number for India at 170,000, rising to 209,000 between 1980 and 1989 and to 573,000 between 1990 and 1999.

I have a problem with it. We had to sell and move from our last house because of our next door Indian or Paki neighbors. They do NOT assimilate.

Sounds like Paki's to me. While not all Indians assimilate quickly, they do better than most who come as families, and not as spouses of Americans (IE. "War Brides" or "Mail order brides") With any immigrant group it has historically been the kids who do the assimilating, not the immigrants themselves, unless of course they were kids when they immigrated.

Considering they spoke NO English....no I never knew exactly where they were from.

Most certainly Paki or other non Indians. Around 50% Indians, speak English, even in India. (Estimate provided by an office mate who is an immigrant from India, albeit several decades ago) It's uniquely accented English, but it is English. India was after all a British colony even longer than the original 13 colonies were. Of course Pakistan was part of India then, but they have different educational standards. The folks could be from Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, as well. They tend to be even lower educated and lower income than those from the former "West Pakistan". It's even possible they are second stage immigrants, say from some south American country, but of Indian or Pakistani heritage. I ran into a guy at the transmission shop (He was the owner or at least manager) like that.

Do you know that in America, a programmers career is over at 35, and an engineer's at 40?

Funny, I'm 56 and still employed as an Engineer. I was even doing some fairly heavy technical work until about 18 months ago, when I got transferred to a less technical, but still engineering, position.

The interesting thing I learned is that most Indians can only speak to each other in English, since there are so many different native languages in India.

Well that's assuming they need to speak with someone who doesn't speak their dialect, and that they also cannot speak Hindi, which, along with English, is one of the two official languages of India.

Hispanics did not build America. The Hispanic population was infinitesimal prior to the 1950s. On the mainland USA it was 1% in 1950

They didn't ask that question for the '50 census, but in 1940 the fraction was 1.8% while in 1990 it was 9.0%. I'm sure the '90 and later if I took the time to find the results, under reports the Hispanic fraction, by not counting many of them at all. http://www.census.gov/population/documentation/twps0056/tab01.xls

We have to guess (and I don't like that).

I agree with you.

What I'm saying is, from my knowledge, being part of CBP (INS), it's very unlikely that the 1.4 million includes any legitimate visa holders.

The Indians that enter on visa's are more likely to return to their country then to stay here illegally.

There are many factors. Programming, even business application programming, is primarily a young man's game. The best people tend to advance into either management or other careers that pay a higher salary with less stress.

This may mean that the older people are less desirable, with obsolescent skills.

Or you can be like me, at age 53, and still be technical. But it is hard to keep learning a new technology every year. Eventually, you can't keep up. Moreover, if you are a mature guy, there is a lot of pressure to help out on the project management side of things, so you can't keep up your technical skills as well as you should.

But I would say people with a high skill level, if they have a good attitude, will always find work at any age. Employers are looking for them.

I would make it "one of the great civilizations"!!

No, I would concur with the earlier post, America IS the greatest civilisation.

And I realise that even though I am not an American.

Most of the Indians who live near me are technical and medical professionals--very hardworking, polite and generous.

"Every East Indian is a legal immigrant........unlike the "process" for illegals, the selection process for legal immigration is lengthy and closely controlled (as it ought to be)."

Yes. And as a matter of fact, immigration for family reasons is somewhat expensive as well as being time consuming. Many pay more taxes than citizens. It must be difficult for legal immigrants to bear so much cost and effort, while so many illegal immigrants are allowed to do it by sneaking in and working for tax-evading employers.

Drives me nuts, familyop. Appears that those of us who follow the law are punished by the law while the illegals get "earned citizenship" automatically, whatever that means.

Actually Indcons is quite right. Most Americans dont seem to understand the difference between Indians and Pakis (and Bangladeshis) just because they all look the same. There is vast disparity in the average income levels, average education levels and crime rate between Hindus (+ Sikhs) and Pakistanis (+ Bangladeshis) almost everywhere including US, UK and Canada. A recent survey in the UK revealed the stark difference. Hindus (+ Sikhs)are 14 times more likely to get jobs as compared to Muslims. Hindus (+ Sikhs) are the richest community in UK (richer than Whites) while Pakistanis (and Bangladeshis) are the poorest. Indians almost always wrongly get clubbed with the Pakis and get subjected to hate crimes for the wrongdoing of Pakis. Sikhs even get killed for wearing turban and looking like Muslims when infact their religion was born to fight the Muslims.

seems like Sheana doesn't know if they are Indians or Pakis or Arabs or South - East Asians. Also, this sounds suspiciously like a bachelor pad -- all adult males. And a bachelor pad with 10 males would be noisy -- no matter WHICH community they come from. Thirdly, she's making a generalisation based on this group who's ethnic origins she doesn't know and who seem like the worse example of their group. And then she uses terms like "these people", sheesh, how silly is that?

well then, you were mighty quick to label them Indians, weren't you? For all you know they could have been Caribbeans, South Americans, light-skinned africans, Arabs, southern Mediterraneans, Albanians, Persians, South Asians, South East Asians or someone with a tan -- seems like classifying everyone with a brown skin as "the other"
