Did NY TImes Bias Lead to "Wishful Thinking" On Bogus Forged Ballots Story?
NewsBusters ^ | 12/14/05 | Bob Owens

But there is one problem with the Times article... the single-sourced story appears to be totally false:

The head of Iraq's border guards denied police reports on Wednesday that a tanker truck stuffed with thousands of forged ballot papers had been seized crossing into Iraq from Iran before Thursday's elections.

"This is all a lie," said Lieutenant General Ahmed al-Khafaji, the chief of the U.S.-trained force which has responsibility for all Iraq's borders.

Even if the details are incorrect, is anyone denying that Iran is doing all it can to keep its proxies in power? Or that our government is looking the other way so that it can proclaim the elections a great victory for democracy? Where there's smoke, there's fire.

Here is a key line from the NYT story: "The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity...."

The NYT is on the "dangerous Shia, poor Sunnis" kick because it runs counter to U.S. policy. I note that Fox News repeated the story this morning.

Drudge has it up now. It sounds very plausible in light of everything else Iran is up to these days.

I think this was first reported by CNN and then Drudge.
(But it may have started with a report from IranFocus, an MEK sympathizer.)

FoxNews said that the 'source' (Iranian truck driver) told officials, who stopped him, that several other trucks filled with illegal ballots had already crossed into Iraq.

[There were reports of some voter fraud in the previous election too. Where's Jimmah? Being chased around the peanut farm by the killer rabbit?]

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1539905/posts

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- With the country's parliamentary elections slated for Thursday and early voting already under way, a truck carrying what are believed to be fake ballots was detained in the Iraqi border province of Wasit, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

U.S. investigators were being sent to examine the ballots in Wasit, located on the Iranian border southeast of Baghdad.

The truck's driver was Iranian, as was the truck's license plate, said an Iraqi Interior Ministry source. Authorities are investigating reports that other vehicles with possible fake ballots have been trying to cross the border into Iraq."

Seems the story is either true or false. It would be interesting to get at the truth.
