Why does Free Republic call it a Holiday Party?

Because the word holiday is derived from the words holy and day.

Why do they even poll this? You get the impression this disappoints these media types.

You got it backwards. 1% are atheists and 4% are agnostic.

I think that is because of the way they worded it.

When they say 5% don't believe in God that is atheistic. If you don't believe or disbelieve in God that is agnostic.

As I look at the way they continued I can believe there are many more agnostics than athiests.

As the atheists say " An agnostic is one who still has a foot in the God camp. - Tom

And the handwringing liberal rats will cry that this makes it even more important to "protect" the rights of the other 6%, who God Forbid, here someone talking about God anywhere around them.

A lot of people say they believe, but it is obvious that a large percentage of the population is merely saying that and does not actually believe it in practice.

Obvious? I don't think it's necessarily obvious. I think a great majority of people are believers, but like all humans, we give in to temptation and are subject to sin.

In my experience, most people don't even try. I know many atheists that lead holier lives than the vast number of nominal believers. A person is defined by their actions, not what they profess.

I hardly expect people to be perfect but most people put approximately zero effort into following the tenets of their religion. They follow their religion when it is convenient or little effort is required, but routinely and habitually engage in behaviors that they are supposed to abhor.

But, the God they do not believe in is different for each nonbeliever.

And conversely.

God means the cause of all causes. He has different names, is worshipped on different days in different kinds of buildings, or in peoples' houses, or in the privacy of one's own heart.

As soon as people start talking about "which God" it means they aren't referring to God, because He is the one without a second. God is not Christian, Jewish, Hindu, or any other label. Such labels have a beginning and an end, and God is beyond time.

Those are some pretty wide generalizations, but I can see some of your underlying reasoning. Still, I know many people who agonize over what is right and what is wrong--as defined by their religions. It's difficult to live up to God's standards, but to say that "most people don't try" or that most put "zero effort" is not accurate, and it's not for you to judge.

I couldn't said it better myself. I think there's a big problem with people who think the only God is their God.

Funny comment for a DUh'r on the subject:
Rowdyboy Donating Member (1000+ posts):
7. 61% of liberals believe in God.....On DU the number is closer to 20%

We may be many things here at DU, but we are NOT representative of the Democratic party as a whole. Not by a long shot.

EVERYONE believes in God at one time or another. The most hardened atheist will be praying for salvation, redemption...or life when the bullets are flying over the foxhole. The little turds that don't believe....have never had a life threatening situation......EVER. But they will...
