SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) -- Convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams, the Crips gang co-founder whose case stirred a national debate about capital punishment versus the possibility of redemption, was executed early Tuesday.
Williams, 51, died at 12:35 a.m. Officials at San Quentin State Prison seemed to have trouble injecting the lethal mixture into his muscular arm. As they struggled to find a vein, Williams looked up repeatedly and appeared frustrated, shaking his head at supporters and other witnesses.
"You doing that right?" it sounded as if he asked one of the men with a needle.
After he was declared dead, his supporters shouted in unison: "The state of California just killed an innocent man," as they walked out of the chamber
The case became the state's highest-profile execution in decades. Hollywood stars and capital punishment foes argued that Williams' sentence should be commuted to life in prison because he had made amends by writing children's books about the dangers of gangs and violence.
In the days leading up to the execution, state and federal courts refused to reopen his case. Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger denied Williams' request for clemency, suggesting that his supposed change of heart was not genuine because he had not shown any real remorse for the killings committed by the Crips.
"Is Williams' redemption complete and sincere, or is it just a hollow promise?" Schwarzenegger wrote. "Without an apology and atonement for these senseless and brutal killings, there can be no redemption."
Williams was condemned in 1981 for gunning down convenience store clerk Albert Owens, 26, at a 7-Eleven in Whittier and killing Yen-I Yang, 76, Tsai-Shai Chen Yang, 63, and the couple's daughter Yu-Chin Yang Lin, 43, at the Los Angeles motel they owned. Williams claimed he was innocent.

Is everyone just refusing to look at those pics or what?
It was apparently a bit slow. They took about 12 minuts to find suitable veins. That still leaves about 20 minutes for him to die after the chemicals began flowing. None of the reports I've seen describes exactly how he expired after the chemical injections started. He was definitely in very good physical condition, a fact that probably prolonged his passing. I'm playing a very small vioilin to celebrate his departure.
Could this kind of thing be why it took the technicians so long to hook him up to the apparatus? A little extra-curricular payback?
Back in the dya of the headsman, the custom was for the subject to tip him to assure a quick departure.
Did the other co-founder die of extreme lead poisoning? Or is he a dead man walking too?
Old Snoop Dung and company are either looking for some publicity or are truly retarded.
I was working for the Youth Authority and can remember the first time I heard the word crips in late 72. In 73/74, we had Jamal Barnes on our housing unit. His biceps were 23 inches and we had to cut his shirts so he could put them on.
Barnes was a real thug and clearly the leader of the group. He called everyone cuz.
After he left I heard he was one of the original OGs in the crips.
Barnes is on the radio last week telling the story that he was already there when tookie drive up.
BTW Barnes appeared on the gong show flexing his muscles to music. Yes, he was..............
We used to tell the wards that crip meant cowards run in packs. The biggest gang where I worked was the staff.
First of all I don't doubt this for a second. Second of all, one has to wonder if this played into the whole process - one could imagine that this sort of info would make it to the governator's desk and could conceivably be one of very many factors used to come to his decision.
Where is the link?
"Some liberals were worried about the gap in the Children's Book market that will be left behind following Williams' execution."
Not to worry. We have Madonna on duty now. And the rest of Hillary's "Village" will take up the slack.
Nope, doesn't work that way - you could effectively be superman, but once you get hit with pentothal, pancuronium bromide and KCL - you're done - no matter how many weights you may have lifted.
Nice for everyone to call him "Tookie" which was supposedly his nickname given by his mother..his gang nickname was supposed to be "Monster", IMO much more fitting, but not as likely to draw sympathy...
..tell us now, Cuz, if it was all worth it...
Some liberals were worried about the gap in the Children's Book market that will be left behind following Williams' execution."
Amazing........they now have something else to worry about.
If he maintained he was "reformed"... reformed from WHAT exactly? I thought he claimed his innocence. I thought he said he didn't do it?
"I didn't do it!.. but um.. I'm really sorry and I'm rehabilitated!"
Makes no sense, what is he sorry for if he didn'd do it?
It seems to have worked.
