China trumps US as top PC, phone exporter
The Washington Post ^ | Monday, December 12, 2005 | Reuters

PARIS (Reuters) - China surpassed the United States as the world's top exporter of laptop computers, mobile phones and other information and communications technology devices in 2004, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said on Monday.

China exported $180 billion worth of so-called ICT goods in 2004, compared with U.S. exports of $149 billion, the OECD, a free-market agency funded by 30 countries, said.

OECD officials said that China was likely to take top spot in 2005 too, but hard proof would take many months to collect.

Yeah, that's why instead of complaining, you shouldn't give Microsoft or IBM your money anymore.

If they can't pay, they don't deserve jack. Or are you like THE FLAMER, who seems perfectly content with giving them things for free? His exact words on another thread were "why not let them have it?"

I don't think it is wise to underestimate just how good Chinese research can be.

I didn't say they are not as intelligent, nor did I suggest that their research "couldn't be good."

But I think it's ironic that you cite a mathematical hacking article about tearing down something created in the West, not creating something, and funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a government entity run directly by bureacratic cadres. I'm not talking about basic research that our own government finances haphazardly by its own bureaucrats...I'm talking about the real engines of innovation....give me the Chinese story of their own Apple, Microsoft, powered aviation, anything that started a whole new industry.

When I ask chinese what they think is great that their society has created, they talk about gunpowder for crying out loud! It's so cliche I can't even believe they're serious.

Who is the first chinese version Bell, Gates, Edison, Lear, Salk, Jobs, Goodyear, Eastman, Hewlett or Packard that comes to your mind? How bout recent Oppenheimer or Einstein that have emigrated to China to "sell-out?"

Is America blessed with its history of innovation because the government bureaucrats made good policy decisions? Is China suddenly going to reverse millenia of history by simply implementing a couple of 5-year plans? Or is there something inherently different about the two systems and cultures that encourage and discourage advances?

This is not my theory, by the way. I've just co-opted it from people like Chang's "The Coming Collapse of China" and others and my own personal experiences. We may all be wrong, and if America can no longer compete with a corrupt regime like the PRC, then we don't deserve to lead anymore.

Pay - with - what? What are you going to accept in payment from the Chicoms in return for food?

Ever heard of "money"? Are you saying they don't have any, or any way to get any? They somehow managed to find a couple of billion U.S. dollars to buy the IBM PC company. Don't you work or used to work for IBM?

We may all be wrong

I'd say anyone who thinks or thought we could build up China's economy to be bigger than ours and keep them on a leash is definitely wrong. They've never really done a damn thing we've ever wanted them to, did you actually expect gratitude from them for our investments? HA, they have little respect for us, why should they when they push us around all day every day.

Why, YES I have indeed!

So, Golden Eagle wants to trade American food for Chicom money! Doesn't this make you a traitor? Do you realize that food is fungible? You are willing to take filthy chicom money in exchange for American food that will be used to feed Chinese soldiers that will someday kill our brave young men you bastard! Traitor!

Food sold today can't easily be used in the future to fight wars against the U.S. Technology can, and while you seem to want to make jokes and hide from the real issues, China has in fact now passed the U.S. in technology output, and unless things change drastically and quickly, we will never match them again.

That seems just fine to you guys, that like to go over to China and help them advance their industries for a paycheck, and apparently think that's what the rest of us should do too. Count me out, I'll stay here working in the U.S. for the U.S., and try to help us keep pace instead of furthering the Chicom lead.

You already said you would trade with the Chicoms and feed them now. Your statement above has no credibility.

Bush, Reagan and Nixon all thought engagement was a good strategy. I'll follow their lead if you don't mind.

Policies that are obviously failing, as China begins to pass us economically and makes more overt threats against Taiwan than ever.

You forgot your best buddy, Clinton. After all he signed the bill that created the WTO and rid America of the ability to give most favored nation status, or not, to the Chinese. Now because of "free trade" we cannot discriminate against the Chinese in our trade policies, because that would be considered putting up "barriers".

Never mind that the Chinese government puts up a barrier to their economy by requiring that companies locating there share their ownership with the Chinese communist party.

This is the kind of thinking that is more dangerous to American Liberty than anything else. As if the first answer to every problem is to increase government control.

After that fails, you'll demand a 5-year plan, maybe? No thanks, comrade.

Well if the neocon advocates of corporate globalization get their way, it's a moot point.
We won't be growing enough food to feed ourselves, let alone have any extra to trade to the Chinese.

You can read their disingenous double-talk here: Free trade for a better future (Paul Wolfowitz Op-Ed)

Well your plan sure as hell isn't working. China's tech exports went up almost 50 percent in one year and blew the US out of the water. Now we'll probably never catch up but you don't care since your answer seems to be go over there and work for them.

Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.
--William Pitt

It seems like you're willing to infringe on everyone's freedom in the name of "necessity."

Now we'll probably never catch up....

Catch up to what? Turn the US into a manufacturing sweatshop? Grow up. China is just now going through its industrial revolution. So what?

The US is at FULL EMPLOYMENT. 5% unemployment is as good as it gets. Let's take all of the Walmart employees at $10/hr and put them on an assembly line for a competitive $1/day. They can live in grass huts and compete with the hungry manufacturing employees around the world.

Or, we can elect Cassandra Buchanan as president and increase the unemployment rate with his command economy plan.

The US is at FULL EMPLOYMENT.

No it's not. IBM just laid off more than 10,000 as those jobs moved to China. 5,000 more will keep their jobs here in the US but are now employed by a front of the Chinese government named Lenovo. GM is laying off 30,000, Ford is expected to announce similar cuts. Are you blind, or is that what you want for everyone? That or working down at Walmart, sounds like.
